Boat To Row - Loyal Light

The second session with Boat To Row. Just before the band played at Rugfest in Oxford, Mike took us into a shipping container to perform a song. Here is the result!

Things we discovered on tour...

1. There are hours of fun to be had thinking up cat-dictator puns between sound check and show (Chairman Meaw, Catila The Hun, Adolf Kitler, Saddam Pussein, Fidel Catstro, to name a few...).

2. The way home from Milton Keynes is terrifying after Michael's told his scary cardboard box story.

3. Ben can survive for approximately 20 minutes in a loaded car with a box of EPs on his face.

4. Anna's potted history of 19th century poetry does not keep Ben awake on long drives home; a good session of air guitar and winding the windows down for a full face of freezing rain does the trick.

5. Mountain Dew energy drink makes Billy buzz.

6. Emma and Lloyd can quote any part of the Muppet Christmas Carol on demand, complete with songs and accompanying harmonies.

7. Michael + Billy + many instruments + the back seat = a surprisingly cosy time.

8. Anna becomes a rage monster if forced to go for too long without food.

9. A packet of chocolate hobnobs goes down a treat in the middle of the night.

10. Ben's unconscious desire to knock other members of BTR out with his on-stage bass dance is finally revealed.

11. We unanimously agree that we would rather turn into a squid for one day every year for the rest of our lives than carry a squid around with us in our pocket every day for a year.

12. You can't cut a Sainsbury's taste the difference carrot and walnut cake with a carving fork.

When rcomnd began, it wasn’t just intended to be a romping ground for new music. A little spot for sourcing those important artists that you might yet be missing out on, certainly, but not that alone. It blossomed from the recognition that independent, local, attention-deserving bands were worthy of more than just a fleeting mention. rcomnd was designed to be an advocate of each and every one, and to take notice of and endorse their new movements, as well as those that caught our ears in the first place.

When you have good fortune enough to encounter acts of the caliber of Boat to Row, that task becomes exceptionally easy. Bands like Boat to Row cannot slip into the abyss of blog posts and fade from memory, but instead loiter at the forefront of our musical thoughts. And from now on, new release Freedom will be at the front of our record collections.

It is with that that rcomnd says; for God’s sake, listen to this song.

Stop what you are doing for a moment, whatever it is you had in your hands; put it down. For Freedom is indisputably a turn-away-from-your-task, stand-up-from-where-you-are-sitting anthem of a song.

Captivating choral harmonies linger amid droning electric keys, twinkling percussion and heartrending lead vocals, where Mike King’s voice enters a realm entirely it’s own in this woebegone ballad. The star of the song though surely is the cavorting fiddle-work, which offers a malevolent intensity and raw instrumental catharsis.

Freedom is available on Boat to Row’s mini-album Loyal Light, which, released last week on istartedthefire Records, bears five stellar tunes, everyone of them a gem set into this golden departure from the airier, whispier folk of the band’s earlier EPs.

Loyal Light demonstrates a darker, more mature string of Boat to Row’s bow. Arguably more polished and pored over than previous releases, it possesses still that sheer honesty that is so intrinsic to King’s compositions. Here we witness a new sort of truth, one starker, colder and of a depth never before heard.

Loyal Light

I know I pretty much only ever post about myself now but our new record came out yesterday and I'm really proud of it, for me it's the best stuff we've done. It's the culmination of a year that's been exciting, exhausting, scary, testing and really hard at times. 

It's feels nice to be able to work so hard at something though because when we reach a land mark like this it feels worth it.

So this summer we had the Croft Sessions boys follow us to film our festival shenanigans! we also decided to strip back all 5 songs of our new E.P, 'Loyal Light' and release 1 every week until the E.P reaches you! so here is our first song, 'Old Scenes', filmed by the canals in Birmingham, we hope you like it!

We are extremely happy to announce our new E.P, 'Loyal Light' will be released on the 19th of November through our adopted parents at istartedthefire records! We are unbelievably excited for you to all hear it! the artwork is by the splendid Rosie Moss, who we've worked with since our 'A Boat to Row, to Row to You'  7" single so we are very pleased she agreed to work on this, we love her work.

We are then taking the record on the road as part of our 'Loyal Light' tour! check out the dates, plonk them in your diary, let us know which show your coming to as it'd be great to hang out!
