Every time Mr LP starts theorycrafting a new magic deck and telling me about all the cards and combos he's putting in there, I feel like I'm watching someone build a nuclear bomb in their basement. Like yes, I know it's really cool how that works, but oh my God at what cost.
Mr LP and I grabbed some booster packs from a game store earlier. He grabs a couple Lorwyn and Commander Masters. I grab Innistrad.
Mr: cool overpaying for old packs 🙄
Me: [shrug] I like the lands.
He pulls 4 packs of... cards. I get Meathook Massacre in my first pack, along with three of the lands I wanted.
Never underestimate the power of Just Liking Things For The Vibes.
I have created a very silly Commander deck and am excited to rock up to the table with it this weekend. Will it top my partner's deck consisting entirely of cards drawn by Rebecca Guay, including lands? No. Will it at least win? Also no.
That may actually be up for debate, since while it's far from optimized it DOES work lol. To be fair if I optimized this deck I'd probably win by turn 5 and no one is having fun then lol. But it's also very hard to fuck up this commander as long as you're running what he needs, which is, coincidentally, the theme lol. However my partner used to play in tournaments and everyone else is big dicking it at the table with B3-4 decks, so the odds are not in my favor lol.)
I am also getting writing done before anyone comes for me - laptop is back in my possession and I've cut out the problem bits that were holding me back I think. We can multitask! Sometimes.
I finished the MSQ for Dawntrail last night, and I've got thoughts. Possibly unpopular ones.
1) I really like Wuk Lamat, and I think her character has potential. If I had ANY quibble it's that sometimes she's a little too wholesome for my tastes. But I'm fully prepared for that to change in a later expansion. She's sweet and naive, and that's a big change from where we were in ShB and EW, so I understand why it's so jarring.
2) This feels like ARR:2, and I think that's a good thing. We're setting the scene for the next big adventure, and I enjoyed the tease about more reflections. (Tbh all this did was accelerate Y'shtola's plans lol.) I'm excited to see where we go next... Hopefully someday Meracydia lol.
3) the fact that Cahciua didn't have an accent will continue to puzzle me. That said, her relationship with Erenville - and her goodbye in particular - hits way different when you've got kids.
4) I was moved by the last leg of the MSQ, and the story of the Endless. As much as EW? No, but where this lacked narrative weight it made up for it with relatability. If you've lost someone you wish you could talk to again, it hits. (Though obligatory ymmv on that I guess.)
5) The zones were beautiful, but I didn't care for most of the music. Some of it (like Lost in the Deep) really resonated and I felt fit the mood. But others... Yeah, sorry, I'm a Smile hater. And I really disliked the ending music. I was concerned about that as early as the trailer, and sad to see I was right. But that's a preference thing. ShB was more my speed.
6) Holy shit the difficulty level ramped up on the dungeons/trials. I couldn't keep up with the mechanics a lot of the time, though I'm admittedly rusty. But again, I think that's a positive.
7) I see what people are saying about the voice acting, but it's really not that bad. (Yes, including the "Sphene! Listen to me!" bit.) If anything I had the hardest time with Gulool Ja Ja, but even then... Not the end of the world. Again, I'm taking it as ARR:2.
I think that's all I've got for now as I'm still kinda processing. But yeah. Overall have a mid-positive feeling toward it. I enjoyed the ending. Thought the lead up was some cool world building. Happy to see where we go.
Today's "woke up with this stuck in my head" ear worm:
so in my one D&D campaign i'm in the party just collectively realized that our one high-elf companion is only 18 (which is a literal fetus in elf years.) and as one we first reacted with abject horror and where are your parents small child and oh no we've been letting him have alcohol and oh no the reason he acts like a drunk toddler is because HE IS LITERALLY A DRUNK TODDLER and then the second reaction was to immediately jump into coparenting mode. we are working out custody arrangements and shifts with the baby leash. having a blast. XD
