Your friend left you after you had fallen asleep, letting you get the rest you needed. As they left, they saw Legolas propped against the wall next to your door. Without exchanging words, the two shared a knowing look and your friend was on their way to their own room down the hall. Legolas made his way into your room that your friend left unlocked after seeing him there.
The young elves' eyes landed on your sleeping frame, tears stained on your cheeks that had only stopped falling a few minutes ago with you having fallen asleep. His eyes followed the way you were facing and saw you had fallen asleep towards the open window where the stars were visible. Memories flooded his mind, the two of you sitting out on a tavern rooftop where he told you stories of the stars and their significance to the elves. You had always had a love of the stars, but hearing Legolas speak of them brought about a new found love of the stars. Legolas made you love things you never did before, including him. You could listen to him speak about anything for hours. Part of him knew this though. He first noticed it when he came to you about troubles with his father, Thranduil. He went on and on about the troubles with him for hours and you sat there intently listening to him, eyes fixated on him as he spoke. He knew at that moment he loved you and only you. No one listened to him the way you did, no one cared for him the way you did… But he also didn’t care for anyone the way he cared for you. It was that night, months ago he asked you to be his girlfriend.
Looking back down at you again, you were in a deep sleep, your eyes behind your eyelids moving softly as you shuddered in your sleep. He could tell you were having bad dreams. His eyebrows furrowed, his mind wanting to know what you were troubled with but his heart knew it was him. He had hurt you.
Bending down a little, he pulled your blankets up around you and tucked you in warmly. Gently, he caressed the back of his warm hand against your cheek, brushing the strands of hair that laid over your face out of the way. “I’m sorry…” The tall blonde elf whispered, his eyes running over your sleeping frame once more before he disappeared out of your room.
You woke up with a start, sitting up right. You looked around your almost dark room, a candle burning on your nightstand. Slowly, you raised your hand to your cheek, your eyebrows furrowing. Was someone here? You knew your friend had been there, you remembered that. But it felt as if someone besides them had been there… Was it a dream? It felt awfully real…
The next morning you got yourself ready after taking a hot shower to wash away the past night's wallow session. You had been taught by your awful father that emotions were for the weak. It was rare you let yourself cry so you hoped taking a shower would wash away all of that.. It didn’t. You just lied to yourself that it did.
In the dining hall you didn’t see Legolas at all. He was usually there before you but always waited for you so the two of you could have breakfast together. After waiting a while, the roaring in your stomach was too much to handle so you settled on getting some food. You hoped if Legolas did show he wouldn’t mind that you ate without him. Even though he had hurt you, you were still worried about your everyday routine with him. He meant the world to you and you weren’t sure if you were ready to let that go. He was all you had. Yes, you had friends. But you loved Legolas.
When it came time for patrol you didn’t see Legolas once again. Tauriel was there. You asked where Legolas was and she said he was sent out on a mission by Thranduil. It felt as if the world shifted beneath you and you were thrown on your ass at that point. Why wouldn’t Legolas come and tell you? Or at least have someone tell you before he left? He had done so in the past… Why would things have to change now. You weren’t ready for things to change.
“When will he be back?” You found the words leaving your mouth before your brain even had thought of the question.
“I don’t know. Why’re you so worried, Y/N? He’s the Prince. He can handle himself.” Tauriel replied roughly before getting onto her horse.
With a soft nod you followed after her on foot, your head hung low. You kept quiet for the rest of patrol. Patrol passed by agonizingly slow. All you thought about was Legolas. Was he safe? Was he okay? Did he hate you now? What had you done so wrong to make him hate you? As the thoughts kept stacking up in your head, you felt yourself becoming more and more overwhelmed. By the end of patrol, you were nearly running back to your room. As soon as the door shut behind you, you ran into the bathroom, holding onto the counter for dear life.
“Breathe… Just breathe…” You whispered to yourself in the mirror as tears started to prick your eyes.
Shaking your head, you knew you were far too into your panicked state to stop it. Slowly, you sunk to your knees, clasping a hand over your mouth to hold back the broken sobs that came out. Your brain ran over the same thing again; he hates you, he hates you, he hates you. Feeling your back hit the tub behind you, you pulled your knees into your chest as your hands snaked up your sides and clasped over your ears in an attempt to try and shut out the voices.
“Y/N?” A familiar voice rang out from your bedroom doorway but you told yourself it was just another cruel joke your brain was playing on you.
“Shut up! Shut up! SHUT UP!” You screamed at yourself, tears rolling down your cheeks.
“Hey hey hey. Stop, what’s going on?” The male voice calmly asked, getting closer. A figure knelt down in front of you, your blurry vision making it hard to tell who it was.
You felt two strong, warm hands go to your cheeks and slowly lift your head up to look at them. Slowly opening your eyes, you saw Legolas with his beautiful blue eyes peering down at you with pure worry. “Y/N… What’s wrong?”
“Y-You hate me…” A broken sob followed as you looked at the man you loved, tears in your eyes.
Pain and sadness washed over the Prince’s face as he tilted his head to the side slightly, shaking his head. “Oh, Y/N… No, I could never hate you.” He whispered out softly and sincerely. His thumb gently wipped away your tears before pulling you into his arms.
“W-Why didn’t you tell me you were leaving? Why d-did you avoid m-me today?” You choked out between sobs and tried to control your breathing.
Gently stroking your hair, Legolas rested his chin on top of your head. "My father sent me out first thing this morning. I didn’t get the chance to tell you. I’m very sorry, darling. I would have if I could have..” He said gently, keeping himself calm in hopes it would calm you down. “I could never hate you, Y/N.” Legolas said again, wanting you to truly understand that. “I’m so sorry for what I said to you yesterday. I didn’t mean a word of it. I was angry because I was scared that you could’ve gotten hurt or…” You could hear him choke up ever so slightly at the last part. “Or worse.” Legolas finished.
You looked up at him, seeing him blink back tears. “Legolas.. I promise I never intended to put myself in harm's way…” You said softly to him, searching his eyes. Legolas was always one to keep his emotions in check, something you both had in common from the way your fathers raised you both. “I’m truly sorry I scared you. But, I will be honest with you. If there is ever a day that I must protect you with my life, I will do that. No hesitation.”
A look of concern and anger struck his face for the briefest of moments, but you knew the anger wasn’t towards you this time. You both knew you’d die for each other and it angered and saddened you both to ever think of that but it was the truth.
“I love you, Y/N.” Legolas said softly, pressing a kiss to your forehead then your cheek, following up with your nose.
A soft giggle left your lips. “I love you too, Legolas. Forever and a day.”
A smile broke across his lips before he pressed his lips against yours gently. Passion and love filled the kiss. The fact two people who were immortal until killed in battle were willing to die for each other was something to be said. It was a love to last a lifetime but never to be found again if one were to perish.
