Farewell to Nichelle Nichols. She and the rest of the Star Trek crew taught me what it meant to be human. As a kid, I didn’t realize how progressive that idea was, but it influenced the rest of my life. I don’t draw that many characters from popular culture, but this image is one I had it in my head to make for a long time. Lt. Uhura is also one of the crew of space explorers to be found investigating my basement. Nichelle had some struggles at the end of her life, and my heart goes out to her family. Nichelle decided to continue to stay in the show after Martin Luther King told her not to quit after one episode, how her being on TV will inspire people all around the world, and he was right. She resigned from NASA in 1993 to found a company researching the application of technology to daily life. She is a dancer and holds nine honorary doctorates in science, engineering, letters, and the humanities. For whatever (racist) reason, Robert Doremus seems to have drawn a young Penny Marshall as Lt. Urura. Saalfield gave the artist credit in this book, something rarely seen in vintage coloring books, maybe as to place blame where it squarely belongs.
