Au where soulbonds exist. Soulmates doesn't necessarily mean romantic and soulmates are notoriously difficult to identify with the soulbonds only feeling the other's feelings, nothing else. So not much effort is put into finding soulmates.
Inho detects his soulmate is in the games when he felt his soulmate's terror when red light green light reveal the twist of the eliminations. The same terror Inho was intricately familiar with when it was Inho's games. Inho doesn't know who it is yet, only that they survived. He watched the players intently during game 2 to see which player's emotions matches his soulmate's. He identifies his soulmate when player 456 removed the intact umbrella.
Gihun knows his soulmate went through terror and despair a few years back before it faded into apathy and not much else. Gihun always tried cheering his soulmate through postive feelings but it never works. The sudden alertness and dread in his soulmate's feelings tipped him off that maybe his soulmate is watching him in the games somehow. That theory was confirmed when he went for the higher numbers vests before game 5 when his soulmate sent him WRONGWRONGWRONGNOBAD feelings that stops him in his tracks. Gihun instead goes for the last numbered vest and all those feelings were replaced with relief.
(Later in the limo)
"Who are you?"
"I think you already know."
Inho knew he had a soulmate way before he married his wife, Yuna. His wife didn’t think she had one but she once asked Inho if he wanted to find his. He said no. He said he chose Yuna and he didn’t much care to find his soulmate.
besides, he thinks his soulmate is married as well so it doesn’t matter.
But then Yuna gets sick. And then the games. And then Ilnam and the mask and Inho almost loses his will to live and clings to the games as a life raft.
He can feel his soulmate through their bond try and cheer him up but Inho doesn’t care. He sends nothing back to his soulmate and sometimes wishes his soulmate would disappear.
And the 2020 games. Inho looks on during red light and green light when he’s hit with utter terror, disbelief and a fear of death and he knows, HE KNOWS his soulmate is playing the games.
He stands frozen and when the game ends and his mate is still alive, still afraid, hurt and shaking, all Inho can do is slump in his chair and pray his soulmate survives.
At the end, he feels the relief and slumps down on his chair. For the first time in years, he feels something other than apathy, something other than loneliness. And he vows to himself that his soulmate will survive,
Next game, Inho pays very close attention to all the players trying to figure out who his soulmate is but it’s not until he sees Gihun barely getting the umbrella out on time does he realize who it is.
From the on, he tries to send encouraging thoughts to his soulmate, hoping and begging him to survive. When Gihun goes for the number 1 best in glass bridge he practically screams NO NO NO BAD BAD BAD through their bond and Gihun immediately backs away, looking around before choosing vest 16.
In the last game, Inho wants to kill Sangwoo himself and he’s so desperate, so angry and so scared that he’ll lose his soulmate but when Sangwoo kills himself he lets out a daughter of relief.
Usually, it’s the masked officer to release the winners but Inho is the one to take Gihun.
In the limo, Gihun is sniffling and mumbling and when he asks Inho who he is, Inho takes off his mask, comes closer and touches Gihun’s knee who immediately jumps and stares at Inho in awe and terror.
Inho smiles and says “I think you k ow who I am.”
And Gihun is both happy to have found his soulmate but also terrified because his soulmate was watching him, his soulmate was watching him play. Which means his soulmate is part of the organization that steals people away and forces them to play for sport.
Jun-ho told In-ho he’d send this video to Gi-hun, the recruiter, the masked officer, the pink soldiers and every single player if In-ho didn’t come home. In-ho showed up at their front door in less than an hour
SN I'm super sad now because I didn't realize Lee Joo-Sil (Actress of Hwang Bros' Mother) had passed last year 💔 She was great in not only Squid Game but Uncanny Counter & anything else she was in I'm sure. Grateful for her life & I wish her spirit peace & joy 💙🥰😭
