In the fog we drift forward and back over dark waves. At last our little boat finds shelter against the willows. After midnight I’m still up, heavy with wine. A smoky lamp is still burning. Rain still sighs on the bamboo thatch of the boat’s cabin.

Lu Yu (1125–1209), a prominent poet of China’s Southern Song dynasty, was ‘born on a boat floating in the Wei River early on a rainy morning’.

Kenneth Rexroth (1905-1982) was an American poet, translator and critical essayist. A prolific reader of Chinese literature, he was also among the first poets in the United States to explore traditional Japanese poetic forms such as haiku.
