This was part 1 of my final assignment for Art History II: the series of photographs called "Our Lady of Unending Pleasures"
Resulting of all the reflections had in class about the representation of bodies, eroticism, religion, and transgression. The series is inspired by the Barroque and Mannerist movements, and in particular the sculpture "The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa."
The work explores the tension between the sacred and profane, often times depicted in classical art; divine ecstasy is often compared across art history to both carnal pleasure and pain.
As a gay autistic artist who was raised catholic, doing blasphemy is truly one of my most favorite things - christian imagery is often so full of latent sexuality AND suffering, it's literally just kinky, so why not bring those undertones to the surface!
This was incredibly fun to make and terrifying to show in class, but the whole experience really opened me up to the possibilities of showing bodies and sex in art, myself included

🇺🇸 Salvator Homni (2023)
this piece was made for an art history presentation on paleo-christian art, and how depictions of christ evolved over time. My christ looks like the most vulnerable people in our time, and the quote on top is a free translation of “God blessed me by making me transsexual for the same reason God made wheat but not bread and fruit but not wine, so that humanity might share in the act of creation." by Daniel Mallory Ortberg.

essa obra foi feita para um seminário sobre arte paleo-cristã, e como representações de cristo evoluíram através da história. Meu cristo se parece com as pessoas mais vulneráveis da nossa época, e a frase no topo é uma tradução livre de “God blessed me by making me transsexual for the same reason God made wheat but not bread and fruit but not wine, so that humanity might share in the act of creation." por Daniel Mallory Ortberg.
The Angel and the Pomegranate (pleasures of the flesh) - 2024
I was in a real blasphemous phase last year (another work made for Art History II - we had to paint in the style of mannerism)
more backlog things, this time one of my favorite works ever - an artist's book made for Art History II in 2024
this little trio is where it really started clicking for me
we were having a lot of discussions about how (and whose) bodies are depicted across art history and it scratched my brain in the exact perfect way
in order:
One Rib at a Time - drawing
One Rib at a Time - poem
Trabsmutation (I Reject your Form)
Poem reads:
"My body is a temple – Dyonisian, hedonistic, pagan.
It's the clay I mold with my own hands.
No matter the immortal, what is right and what's been done.
I make myself of blood and flesh,
One rib at a time
One rib at a time
One rib at a time
One rib at a time
One rib at a time
One rib at a time
One rib at a time
One rib at a time
One rib at a time
One rib at a time
One rib at a time
One rib at a time"
hello tumblr
I'm a long time lurker but I decided to finally make a blog to post my art, so let me introduce myself :
Good morning, good afternoon and goodnight people of the earth. My name is Lua, also know as Purple, and I'm here to share my art. I paint, draw, sculpt, sketch, doodle, and do whatever else I feel like. I like to make art about my original characters, my own queerness, any fandom I'm in, and a lot of introspective and fantastical themes – I'm a little bit weird in the head (who isn't). So come on in, sit down, have some coffee, and enjoy the ride.
