I'm sorry. I had to make the joke. But, dang that was such a good adaptation. I kinda enjoy it better than the anime, especially considering the absolute ass the pacing is now. Anyway, we should start the prayer circle that will give us all of One Piece in live action.

The child had known some about the hour at hand... the ‘Hour of Legends’. When Kaido’s immense army of countless ravenous monsters faced off against the pitifully outnumbered group of wayward samurai. Kozuki Oden faced the beast head-on despite all that stacked against him. And yet, while victory for the Beasts was all but assured, in one single fleeting moment, the beating heart of the horde was struck down by his streaming swords. Kaido, the strongest creature, was no more. Wano was free, and the beasts strewn and lost like the dragon without his head.

Of course, Yamato was safely tucked away as the war ran its course, unaware and anxiously waiting for the results. In a naive child’s mind, he had hoped it would not come to fighting. He wanted to be with his father... but he had also harbored a respect for Oden, and did not wish death upon him either... Not that he was allowed to make a decision on the matter. At the end of the day, all was done. Unknowingly orphaned now, the young oni was being whisked away by his dear big brother and Kaido’s closest confidant...

“Going??? Where...???” Yamato wriggled in King’s tight yet unstable hold. It was over, right??? Who won??? Judging by King’s intonation... “Did... Kozuki Oden-”

Would Perospero ever consider leaving his mother? What would he do if she was dying? ))

This was a question he had only ever received a few times in the past. Always hushed. Spoken in a lowered voice by people who thought that after a few drinks he would open up to them. It was also a question he had asked himself - sometimes. Usually when he was hurt and weak. When he thought she would have no issues ending his life. During those moments of weakness he would ask himself if there was any way he could leave. But of course, such weakness didn’t last. As soon as he could breathe normally, and he could focus enough to push the pain down to a manageable level, his mind would be clear again.

He would never leave her.

Loyally, he would stay by her side until he died. Yes, he had reconciled with himself a long time ago that he would die before her. He was already 50 years old, and his health was not the greatest. There were only 18 years between him and his mother. He would certainly die before her. A part of him was relieved by this, because it meant he wouldn’t have to see her die. He loved his mom very much. Hopefully he would die before all his siblings too. He didn’t want to attend their funerals. Knowing that he would spend his whole life serving under his mother relieved him of responsibility for his own happiness. He was more a tool than a person. He wasn’t mean to have his own life, but merely support his mother and his siblings in living their lives, and following their dreams.

Another part of him - though it was small - was carrying a crushing sadness from knowing he would never have his own life. The dreams he had had as a teenager and a young adult lived in there somewhere. Buried. He was sure that part of him was the part that would die first, before his physical form hit the ground.

He had learned to be content. Not happy. Never that. But content. He took joy where he could find it. In praise, either from his mother or his siblings. In seeing them succeed and be happy. In knowing that maybe the youngest of his brothers and sisters would grow up and be allowed to follow their own dreams and ambitions. In birdsong. In the way the sun glimmered in candy sculptures.

No, he would never leave her. He both wouldn’t and couldn’t. He had never ever expressed anything other than wanting to be with his mother to her, because he knew that she would never forgive him should he in any way, shape or form give away such treacherous thoughts. He was going to serve her. Always.

As for her dying? The thought itself was bizarre. Perospero was certain she would live hundreds of years. In this hypothetical ( and completely unrealistic ) scenario, he imagined he would do anything in his powers to save her. And if he couldn’t do that, he would stay with her. Help her. Relieve her pain, if there was any. She wouldn’t have to be alone for a single moment. And he would cry. Because despite all the hurt she caused him. All the times she had threatened his life - and sometimes gotten close to ending it - he loved her. He would die before he let anything happen to her. That was his purpose.
