INTERVIEW | ANNA SUDBINA, Artist behind the AW15 Icebreaker Print.
Collaborating with LUCAS HUGH on luxury athletic wear since 2012, Anna Sudbina has been an integral part of our design journey. Her impressionistic visions create beautiful print works that compliment the LUCAS HUGH style. Together we have produced pieces that embody functional elegance and performance.
Since our last interview with her we caught up to find out a little more about the influence behind the ICEBREAKER print, part of our new collection…
What was the inspiration behind the ICEBREAKER print?
Preparing the ICEBREAKER print artwork I wanted to catch the essence of a cold winter morning: crisp air, frost on the pavements shimmering in the rays of rising sun, the first visible breaths of a morning run that form into fog before disappearing.
The painting for this print draws upon the impressionistic version of reality. It has dream like quality with depth created by dozens of translucent layers, broad mosaic brush strokes and complex Vrubel like textures.
Is the ICEBREAKER Print the theme behind a series of works?
No, not at the moment. It was made specifically for the LUCAS HUGH winter collection, but I do like the painting style and technique that was developed in the process, so maybe I will turn it into a series of 4. Continuing from Winter Morning the next ones to follow should draw upon Spring Afternoon, Summer Evening and Autumn Night for colour and textures.
Are hiking and skiing still your favorite sports and have you taken up surfing yet?
Yes, I still love hiking and skiing, unfortunately surfing hasn't happened yet. I used to play tennis as a kid and just started picking it up again recently. It is a bit easier to find courts in London than a good wave.
How does it feel to see your images being worn?
I love it. This is what's great about working on a collaboration. Not only the process itself is an inspiration but the result is also always enriched by the interdisciplinary approach.
Creating a painting for a fashion print is quite different from a painting that is only meant for a wall. You have to think about how it is going to look on a body - will it look as good on a curve as on a flat surface, will it make a woman wearing it more confident?
Why choose to work with LUCAS HUGH?
I like the ethos and energy of LUCAS HUGH and it is important for me as an artist when taking on a project to know that there is a creative compatibility.
What are you working on at the moment?
I am working on an interior design project. It is a bar and club in the City called Reserve Bar Stock Exchange. The bar upstairs is now opened and the nightclub below is still work in progress due to launch in September. Hopefully I will get some time to paint again after that!
Pictured below is the artist. The original of the ‘ICEBREAKER’ print pictured at the top of the article, used in the latest LUCAS HUGH collection is a mixed media painting using acrylics, inks and oils on canvas. An exquisite dream-like representation of a crisp winter’s morning.
