this is half a headcanon prompt and half me begging you to fill up the (admittedly few) things canon glossed over, but how does fakir feel about rue?? do you have any thoughts on their relationship?
i think the biggest thing he feels towards rue is fear. on every level. which we know always, always ( until his turning point in s2 ) expresses itself as anger. it’s a childish effort to control circumstances that seem written into fate and, thus, out of his control. ( love that irony, right ?? ) at every step, rue is someone that throws a wrench into what he’s working to maintain. truthfully, the least of it is her relationship with mytho before the heart shards – it scares him, of course, to have mytho out of his sight and he makes no effort to learn to trust her. to him, she’s nothing more than an interloper and he has seen how mytho won’t take care of himself. so it’s a fairly straightforward irritation that she presents a distraction in mytho’s life that he can’t control.
things change when the plot, both in canon and meta textually, is set in motion. they have an incredibly interesting dynamic in that they really bring out the worst in each other mostly because they’re never quite on the same page. ( a side note – i find it fascinating and extremely well written that at points, they work as each other’s adversaries. mytho, the storybook prince, gets the storybook villain. fakir and rue, the players in the story who are human, get the adversary of fate but see that adversary in each other. ) when rue is pleased that mytho can smile at her, having regained some sense of feeling, that’s when fakir is dreading the return of his heart. and once fakir’s on board, rue isn’t anymore. ( ie, “the only one who doesn’t want the story to move forward here is you.” )
he’s afraid of what she can do to mytho, yes, but also what she makes him confront about himself. his failed knighthood, his inability to protect mytho. but because they’re not characters in stories ( the irony !! i love this SHOW. ) by the end of drosselmeyer’s reign, they get to grow. he never gets enough time to know rue as the person she is, but by virtue of the fact that he can see the love between her and the people he loves ( ahiru & mytho ), he’s very genuine in his interest to write not just mytho, but her as well, a happy ending.
