Lucifer Speculation-Meta: Lucifer’s Dream
I decided to break my speculation into 2 parts. The first is called Lucifer Speculation-Meta: Lucifer’s Dream and the Second Lucifer Speculation-Meta: Only You.
Linda said that Lucifer’s dream is pretty obvious what it means and yet she never said her part but for that reason, I would like to try and break this sequence piece by piece.
First I want to say how peculiar this scene was and I’m not talking about the could have been better VFX! Lucifer in his dreams sets his wings as the reason why Chloe is afraid of him and deep down believes that the wings pose a danger to her... Not just the wings though, his very Angelic nature that the wings represent.
An understandable fear would have been Chloe seeing his Devil Face and be terrified, but in his subconscious, Lucifer believes that the wings are the most fearsome part of himself right now. Perhaps because they are enforced on him and also represent a higher power which so far has not been able to successfully challenge and win. In short, he feels that he has no control over himself, his life and his as of late, he has experienced a troublesome inability to protect Chloe.
Now let’s step back a bit and examine this from another angle. Lucifer sees everything divine and in extent angelic as a threat to himself and of course to Chloe. Amenadiel in S1 almost killed her and Trixie through Malcolm. Uriel posed a direct threat to Chloe in S2 as did Mum with the bomb and also Dad by putting her in Lucifer’s path according to his opinion. It is therefore normal for Lucifer to interpret wings and divinity as something threatening to the one thing he cares most about. It is also why Lucifer has kept Chloe to a distance throughout S3, something that happens again at their dance.
So what can’t Lucifer make go away? It’s not just his wings. It’s the control he feels of the divine over his life and also the unavoidable impact it has on the Detective. It also the constant surveillance and threat he feels he had from his Dad as well as his siblings...
This is something that does not speak only of protection but reminds us that Lucifer actively does not want to leave Chloe's side as he is advancing towards her and does not retreat but urges her, no commands her to leave his side. It’s what we have all felt especially in this episode as Lucifer did not act as warmly to their proximity... I believe that Lucifer in a way tries to make Chloe distance herself from him, which will result in her having a short relationship with Marcus.
In short, Lucifer stays by her side but also drives her away from something we all have seen in S3 and never knew why... In S2 he said he doesn’t want to leave, but at the same time emotionally he wants her safe, however, she must be the one to make that choice. The one choice that everyone have made so far where he is concerned, even Maze. The choice to leave him.
Loss of control when we dream means how overwhelmed we feel with life and Lucifer is no exception. The feelings he has have been overwhelming as well as his present situation. He experiences a distrust towards himself for the first time over what and who he is, how he defines himself and in turn, that means that with his inability to protect Chloe, makes him feel that he poses a threat to her.
At the same time, this dream represents an ongoing Crisis for Lucifer. Have you noticed that he only calls her Detective and not once Chloe?
In their Fall his wings expand so he fails to save her and that signifies a betrayal. A disloyalty of his own body, a sinister divine deception and finally the betrayal towards the woman he loves. The words might seem similar, and they are as they are used as synonyms, but every single one has its own weight in the story. His body has changed, he feels like a puppet where the wings are the cords, and Lucifer is deeply afraid of what that will mean so his body is no longer loyal to his ideas and the path he took for himself. God has been deceptive as Lucifer is no longer the favourite son as far as he knows. Additionally, Lucifer deep down fears that by going his merry way Chloe’s importance in his life will be lost. He sees Chloe as an extension to his own existence where Dad’s plan is concerned, and that is why he makes a mistake to not realise that Chloe might be connected to his past as well as his future. That’s though something I’ll talk about on the second part.
Lucifer is fully aware that he has betrayed Chloe’s trust. He has failed to save her twice already this season, and he also knows that by not being honest with her he has also lost some of the faith that she had on him. Now on a more ground level of understanding this scene, Lucifer’s subconscious knows that he is losing Chloe as his obsession about the wings and the curse, both “scars” inflicted by God, are occupying his mind to the point he sees them as obstacles to be with her when he knows he cannot make that step. Therefore he lets her fall...
Finally, it’s amazing what your brain can scream at you when you are asleep and how you can ignore it when you are awake. However, I do believe that this dream was the cause of Lucifer being more considerate to Chloe and that is why he gave her the prom dance at the end. He wanted to re-connect with her on some level and hold her close and as he cannot very well get to the precinct and hug her. He opted to use another way... He led their dance...
