Commodus (31 August 161 – 31 December 192 AD), born Lucius Aurelius Commodus and died Lucius Aelius Aurelius Commodus, was Roman emperor.

Roman emperor in AD 180-192. Son of Marcus Aurelius and Faustina II. His name was originally L. Aurelius Commodus. On 12 October 166 he and his brother both received the title of Caesar: L. Aurelius Commodus Caesar. He was thereby designated as the natural successor, and the ideological concept of adoptive emperorship was avoided altogether. In 175, Marcus Aurelius took him to the Danube in the war against the Germans. As the first emperor ‘born to the purple’ (cf. Hdn. 1,5,6) and much in contrast to his father, Commodus found himself in a tense relationship with the Senate from early on, at the latest since the conspiracy of 182 in which his sister Lucilla had participated. Some of the executions evidently were motivated by lack of money, due on the one hand to the actions of his favourites, on the other hand to his extreme passion for fights in the amphitheatre, where he even presented himself with the attributes of Hercules (Cass. Dio 72,17-19). On 31 December 192, Commodus was removed through an intrigue: the wrestler Narcissus strangled him in his bath after poison had not worked. It is doubtful whether the murder of Commodus was, as the sources suggest, an improvised reaction to Commodus’s plan to murder the consules ordinarii of 193. It is more likely that it was a carefully prepared conspiracy.
