Mallory was perched on top of a mossy rock, scanner in one hand and phaser in the other. The planet was a small one, and they were only there to examine the local fauna while the engineers did some repairs on the warp core. Well, Mallory was only there to make sure that nothing went pear-shaped - which on that ship, it usually did. 

She checked the scanner for signs of life again, and then scanned the landscape. The science officers who had beamed down were led by Commander Spock, who had told her that her presence was not necessary. Mallory had told him where to shove it. She was Chief of Security, and she was't letting an away team go anywhere without an escort. 

She jumped as the vulcan in question came up behind her, levelling her phaser at him before rolling her eyes and dropping it down again.

"Are we nearly done here, Commander?" she asked.
