As if on cue with Kikkou’s voice, a certain feline leaps up onto Monoyoshi’s lap with a pouch attached to her collar. Naturally, there’s a few pieces of chocolate tucked inside.
“What do you think? She makes a lovely helper, no?”
Location-Themed Drabble Prompts | Jail: Your character bailing mine out of jail
‘What I can’t understand,’ Yagen sighs as he places his hands on the bars, ‘Is why I’m in jail when you’re the one that broke the law.’
“I’m really sorry about this, Yagen-san!”
‘It’s fine,’ he waves it off, before brightening. ‘Maybe your luck’s finally looking up for once, Monoyoshi.’
The wakizashi on the other side of the jail cell door only looks more perturbed by his words. “Yagen-san, shouldn’t we think about getting you out?”
‘Huh? Do you have the bail money?’
“No, but…” Monoyoshi bites his lip, before blurting it out at once. “I saw a demolition team setting up next door, so I’m worried they’ll end up blasting this place too.”
‘Really.’ Although he knows the other sword currently has a penchant for all things disaster, it seems a bit far-fetched to attribute him for every terrible event happening these days. There’s no one else here, so it’d be easy to slip out if they wanted. But the thought of brushing shoulders with the law again after his last run-in with a certain lop-eared officer gives Yagen pause.
‘Well, they won’t do any demolition in the middle of the night, so I’m sure it’ll be fine.’
‘You should be getting home, it’s lat–’ CRACK.
Both Yagen and Monoyoshi look up to see a sizable crack in the ceiling. The next second, a chunk of it falls off and lands in Yagen’s cell, inches from his foot. He coughs from the ensuing dust cloud as he fans the air in front of his face.
‘This place is older than I thought.’
“I don’t think it’s that…”
‘Eh?’ There’s no time for explanations as another chunk of ceiling lands in the cell, this time behind Yagen. Something blocks the moonlight coming in through the window, and Monoyoshi looks beyond it with a harried face.
“Ah! Yagen-san, the demolition crane from next door!”
Yagen has a bad feeling about this. ‘What about it?’
“It’s falling over h–ehh, watch out!” Something crashes into the side of their building with enough force to shake the walls. Another chunk of ceiling falls down as Yagen staggers upright. Monoyoshi doesn’t waste time and starts fiddling with the lock to his cell door.
“It’s not safe here anymore.”
‘You know how to pick locks?’
“Um, not really, but I’ve never failed before just fiddling with lockpicks.”
‘That was before, this is–’ the wall behind him groans threateningly and Yagen immediately tenses. ‘Monoyoshi, pick faster.’
“I’m trying!”
Pieces of brick start popping out of the wall behind Yagen and flinging themselves against the jail bars. The black-haired tantou finds himself dodging them like projectiles as the structure of the cell begins to buckle. An errant brick strikes the door right above its lock, causing Monoyoshi’s fingers to jar from the impact before the lockpick snaps in his hands.
“Oh…”
‘…….’ Yagen looks at the floor. It’s made of concrete. So are the walls, and the bars are pure steel. He considers punching his way out through the bricks behind him, but the ominous creak of whatever it is crushing against the building makes him hesitate.
“I’ll kick the lock open!” Monoyoshi proclaims, and backs away to make a running start. “Yagen-san, please step aside.!”
Bang! The first kick only rattles the door.
Bang! The second one jolts it slightly.
By the time the third one comes around, the ceiling’s starting to collapse. With an irritated click of his tongue, Yagen picks up a chunk of rubble and throws it at the door from the other side.
Bang! CLANG. Bang! CLANG. Bang!
Abruptly, the final kick pops the lock at the same time it opens the door, sending Monoyoshi fly-kicking straight into Yagen’s stomach beyond the cell.
‘Oof–!’
The two tantou collapse in a tangle of limbs before Monoyoshi sits up triumphantly. “Yagen-san, we did it!”
Beneath him, Yagen struggles to sit up. ‘Yeah, we d—’ A chunk of bricks fall down to smack him on the head, knocking him unconscious.
In the end, Monoyoshi has to throw the other over his shoulders and make a run through the doors just before the building collapses. As it turns out, they’d moved all the prisoners already, but forgot about Yagen in his cell.
As it also turns out, destruction of jail cells was a crime, so they get pinned with a hefty fine as thanks for their escape efforts.
‘Monoyoshi,’ Yagen remarks two days later as he sits in a hospital bed with a bandage wrapped around his head, reading over the bill for damages. ‘How much do you think we could sell off your tantou for, once you get it back?’
“P…probably a lot? But, Yagen-san…!”
‘Don’t worry, I’m just joking.’ Yagen sighs and sets it aside. ‘I can make enough to cover this within a few weeks.’
Touched, Monoyoshi rises to his feet to thank him. But he ends up knocking into the patient table by the bed, upturning a bowl of hot soup straight into Yagen’s lap.
“Ah…!”
‘Don’t worry, these won’t cause worse than second degree burns.’
“I’m sorry, Yagen-san!” Monoyoshi bows in apology. His hair catches on the IV drip and rips the needle out of Yagen’s wrist when he straightens up again. “Eh–?”
‘…..’
“…I think visiting hours are almost up, so I should be going now.”
‘That’s not a bad idea.’
They exchange friendly, if awkward, smiles before Monoyoshi heads gingerly out the door. Somehow, he manages to trip the fire alarm five seconds later. As mass panic overtakes the hospital, Yagen sighs and reaches for his cell phone to make a call.
‘…you’re on your way already, Fudou? Good.’
‘Don’t bother visiting me yet, I need you to extract Monoyoshi out of here. Preferably before the authorities arrive.’
“Ah...?” Oh, was he talking? Guess he was. Conversation wasn’t at the forefront of his mind when faced with food, but he supposed he owed the other sword that much at least. Tongue swiping across his lips, the cup is placed back on the table in front of him, the quiet afternoon chatter from the other tables merely background noise. “Nope, it’s all healed, see? Nothin’ to worry about.”
A casual roll of the shoulder, just to back himself up, and Akashi pops another fry in his mouth. Yes, the wonders of modern food. Salty and cheap....although he won’t lie and say he didn’t miss the Citadel’s home cooked meals some days.
“Never did hear how you fared, though...any trouble? I’d give you my take, but, well, I guess that part’s pretty obvious.”
They’re in one of the padded rooms of the hospital’s psych wards, cleared of all furniture except for a large table in the middle. Yagen sits in his wheelchair on the other side, gesturing to the collection of miscellaneous items spread out before him as he holds onto clipboard and pen:
A rabbit’s foot. Preserved four-leaf clovers. Maneki nekos, some omamoris from Little Tokyo, a solid horseshoe, evil eyes, a pot of bamboo, a pile of acorns, etc.
‘These are all supposed to be lucky charms,’ the tantou says calmly. ‘If you hold onto enough of them, maybe it’ll counteract your...condition.’
Perhaps it wasn’t the wisest choice for a sword to be playing with guns, but that didn’t stop Kikkou from trying his hand at one of the shooting games set up along the still-festive streets He’d been trying for a while by then, and had managed only to win one of the smallest of prizes. Did he mind? No, but he was still determined to meet the target’s center at least once.
This particular shot...he could feel it, this would be the one. Slowly and carefully, he pulled the trigger...
Never would he have been prepared for that to be the moment someone bumped his elbow, sending the plastic projectile to the wooden beam holding the storefront together, where it bounced off into the crowd--
He froze, just for a second, when his eyes met who he just narrowly avoided shooting.
“Monoyoshi-chan~!”
All at once the uchigatana rushed through the crowd to excitedly lay hands on either of Monoyoshi’s shoulders.
