Reflecting on today’s note from our friend Mina Murray, it’s easily one of the most chilling passages so far. We have not heard this perspective before: that of the vampire’s victim at the moment of danger.
(Regarding whether or not Jonathan was subject to Dracula’s snacking, we don’t know and that adds a light layer of unreliability to his diary - is he hiding it from Mina? Or was it later transcribed and edited out to protect his reputation?)
Back to Lucy. The sense I got from her description of her walk to the graveyard was that all of nature seemed to be trying to grab her attention to distract her from her intended destination.
I remember, though I suppose I was asleep, passing through the streets and over the bridge. A fish leaped as I went by, and I leaned over to look at it, and I heard a lot of dogs howling—the whole town seemed as if it must be full of dogs all howling at once—as I went up the steps.
It recalls Jonathan’s journey to the castle (which feels so long ago now!) during which he was disturbed by the howling of dogs and wolves, “as if from fear”.
Other readers have shared interesting insights into the presence of technology and the modernity woven into the text, but we are shown here that nature itself recognises the Count as innately wrong in every way that counts, and tries to raise the alarm to those under his influence.
WHAT ARE YOU DOING UP THERE
I think I’m in love with Rooney Forrester... she pranked me
ROONEY FORRESTER
*clears throat*
It’s a B A T H
••• WHY MUST YOU DO THIS TO ME I
Honestly Lucy Pevensie is a bad role model for only one reason. WHO THE HECK GOES TO SOME RANDOMS GOAT-MAN'S HOUSE TO HAVE TEA IN A STRANGE LAND WHERE YOU COULD BE LOST!?!? And just to remind you, at first Tumnus was ready to turn her over to the White Witch. So yes. The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe is a story about a little girl who goes off with a strange man who could easily have her killed.
I was just playing Mario kart with my brother, which tends to turn into an extremely competitive fight for first, when my puppy Lucy jumped into my lap. Being in first and wanting to stay that way, I couldn’t really pet her, so what does she do? PUNCH ME IN THE FACE REPEATEDLY WITH HER POINTY LITTLE PUPPY CLAWS. That’s the story of how I went from 1st to 6th in a matter of a few frenzied minutes
