engagement party headcanon shhh just come
It was unlike her to be lost for words. Such a prepared person, placed in such an uncomfortable situation. The guests huddled at the window, quietly watching the two. She held on to the walls of the balcony.
“Do I even have to ask what you’re doing here?” She refused to look at him.
“I’ve been looking for you for so long, Luce.” He looked pale and nervous.
“And you just happened to find me here and now.” Anger had settled in. The two remained silent for some time, people filtering away from the window and back to the comfort and ignorance of the party.
“You look really pretty.” He said timidly. He waited for her to say thank you, but of course she didn’t. She wanted to smile and had to force herself not to. Nevertheless, he was confident now.
“But I can tell you’re uncomfortable. I can see it in the way you walk.” He gestured to her, taking her hand. She violently ripped his arm away.
“Don’t say that.”
“Then tell me I’m lying, Lucy.”
Again, the silence.
“You’re here in this dress and heels and I know you’d rather be at home, in your sweatpants and your top without your bra on. You’d watch T.V. and then you would fall asleep. And you know whenever you did that; I always got a pillow for you and put it under your head. Did you ever notice that?”
Of course she did.
“I had to change everything when you left, Luce. Everything.” He coughed to mask the lump in his throat. She sat down and looked at him, briefly, before holding her head in her hands and facing the city.
“When you were gone, the pillows still smelt like you. And I didn’t want to wash them, but I could barely sleep. And I’d wake up, dreaming that you were there, but when I reached over to hug you…it was just empty.” He stared at her, waiting for something. Anything. A reaction.
“So you’ve come all the way to New York to tell me you had difficulty washing the pillow covers. Thanks, Clay.” As the words left her mouth and she saw how much they upset him, she knew she had said the wrong thing, but she didn’t correct it. He needed to be hurt like she was.
“It was everything, Luce. I couldn’t cook our favourite meals anymore, because you’d left little notes in the borders. I couldn’t go to the same bars alone, because everyone asked me where you were. I couldn’t watch the rain by myself, because it just…It wasn’t the same.”
For the first time in years, it seemed he was about to cry.
“You know you can’t just…get over Lucy Stillman.” Her chest seemed to collapse in on itself and she had to stand. In the corner of her eye, she noticed the one person left standing at the window. Her husband-to-be, keeping a protective watch over her.
“Yeah well, It’s gonna be Lucy Miles soon.”
“Not yet.” He said, almost inaudibly, reaching out and tenderly caressing her thumb with his.
“Not yet.” She replied.
