Summary: Luke finds out you, his girlfriend, have an amazing singing voice you've hid away all this time, and encourages you to jump toward your dream.

ALL HE ASKS

You had always liked to sing. You just had never, in your entire life, let anyone to hear it.

It wasn’t like you thought you were a bad singer necessarily, it was more that you just felt so insecure singing in front of others. Most of your skills seemed falter if you knew someone was watching or listening, you immediately started making mistakes so eventually you didn’t perform in any way in front of other people. Which, of course, also didn’t help you overcome your shyness.

Even after meeting Luke, you never told him you enjoy singing, knowing he’d insist on hearing it, and you’d never hear the end of him begging to hear you sing. So you kind of just pretended that while you liked music, you didn’t enjoy singing.

Tonight, the garage was empty, and you knew for certain that you would be alone for at least an hour, if not more. So you had dug through the cassette boxes and found a mixtape you decided to give a listen to. Mariah Carey’s cover of I’ll Be There started playing, and you soon found yourself swaying to it, mouthing the words first before actually singing them as loud as stereos did, closing your eyes and imagining, just for a moment, of being in front of a crowd chanting your name as you’d take up the mic.

It was a silly fantasy you knew would never be true, but as your grandmother would often say — impossible dreams don’t cost a nickel, while chasing needless pleasures in life takes everything.

As the song drew to close, you hummed the ending notes, before relaxing against the wall. But unknown to you, someone had entered the garage while you were lost in a song, and now whistled lowly.

“Wow.”

That voice made you jump and you almost ran to the other side of the room in your surprise, before you looked at who said it and saw your boyfriend leaning against the doorframe.

“Luke!” you exclaimed, feeling blood rushing into your face. “What are you doing? I mean… why didn’t you— announcing yourself would have been nice!”

“I was going to!” Luke replied, raising his hands up. “But then I heard you singing and I… why haven’t you told me?”

“Told you what?”

“About you having a voice like that. Seriously, you could become more famous than any of top pop singers if that voice was—”

You shook your head sharply. “No, don’t. It’s not— it’s nothing special.”

“Nothing special? I—”

You turned away from him, picking your backbag from the floor and stuffing your book back in there. “Luke, just leave it. I can’t sing in front of others. All my skill, if there is any, just goes down the drain the moment I know someone is listening.”

He was silent for a moment, before you heard him take a careful step closer. “Well, what if you’ll pretend there isn’t anyone else? Listen, I have a song I’ve been writing, but it doesn’t fit my voice. I’ve thought about selling it, but after hearing your voice — it would fit perfectly. I could write a full album of songs just for you, and teach you write your own songs if you want.”

You scoffed. “You heard me singing for about a minute, tops.”

You knew he was smirking by the way he said the next words, “I’ve been into music my whole life. I know talent when I hear it.”

You glanced at him over your shoulder. Should you? You wanted to, you wanted to say yes so bad, but embarrassing yourself was the last thing you’d want to do in front of him.

“I’m not promising anything,” you decided to say, crossing your arms. “I can try, but I’m not promising I can take it through.”

Luke grinned, taking another two steps towards you and enveloping you into his arms. “That’s all I ask, really.”

Summary: Your parents don't accept Luke as your boyfriend, but when have you listened to their opinion anyway? Especially when Luke writes songs for you.

MAGIC

It wasn’t unclear how much your parents disapproved Luke. A lead singer of a rock band, rock bands were almost as bad as rappers — they’d end up overdosing on drugs and dying in some alley. They had forbidden you from meeting him, but it wasn’t like you were going by what they told you to do anyway. So you kept meeting him, sitting at that garage, listening to the boys play.

The garage phone rang time to time — you had no idea how, but your parents had figured out the number. But the guys always said neither you or Luke were present, and they offered your parents a chance to come search for you if they don’t believe that. They had threatened to come on many occasions, but they never appeared anyway.

Today, the mood was a little bit calmer than usual. They didn’t perform for you, they rather just tuned their guitars, Alex was dusting off his drums, and Luke was browsing through his notebook.

“He wrote something for you,” Reggie told you suddenly, earning a glare from Luke.

“Shut up,” your boyfriend barked.

“He did,” Alex confirmed. “He wrote it all night.”

You looked at him, surprised, and he shrugged. “I— it’s not ready yet. But yeah, I’ve written something for you.”

You blinked, your heart skipping. “Can I hear it?”

Luke shook his head. “I haven’t really made the music for it yet, just the lyrics. Sorry.”

“…Can I read it, then?”

He held the notebook closer to his chest for a moment, before nodding slowly, letting you take it from his hands and read through it.

You read in silence for a moment, marvelling the way of words your boyfriend had — he had a true skill, a chance to actually become a world famous superstar. Not that it came as a surprise to you, but this song especially truly showed his skill.

"Luke," you said.

"It's rough," he said quickly. "The second verse especially, I know it's—"

"It's really good."

He froze, before he blinked. “Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

He stared at you for a moment longer, before he slowly grinned. “I’ll make sure you’ll be the first one to hear it when it’s ready, then.”

“You’d better,” you muttered, leaning in for a kiss. “And after that, I want the whole world to hear how I’m yours.”

He chuckled, granting you the kiss you wordlessly asked him — and you felt yourself falling even deeper in love than you already were. Luke was truly the best thing that had happened to you, and you wouldn’t trade him for anything.
