Mac had texted Luke and he wanted her to chase him. She'd had enough of game playing. She may not be a king or queen on this chess board but she was an active pawn now. Thank you Luke for that. Her thoughts have been a nonstop nightmare even while awake. What finally pushed her over the edge from passive to active was finding Ana the day before. Luke had left her there. No way to call for help. Possibly to die. The soundtrack in Mac’s head had additional sounds to it. Ana whimpering, her pain. Mac wanted to draw blood now.
Luke had warehouses everywhere. She knew the location of four. That is all she needed to know when working for him. The main one was always monitored by a whole host of lost boys. The numbers would be against her there. She didn't have enough bullets. But that left three other warehouses to pick and choose from. Mac chose one that had three to five boys at most as wasn't heavily used. It wouldn't be the biggest hit against Luke but maybe enough to draw him out.
She'd spent half a day watching from the car. When she was ready to strike, she parked about a mile away. No need for her car to be noticed or compromised. She stuck to side streets and shadows when walking to the warehouse. Mac had counted boys going in and out. Definitely three. She was at the corner of the building when one of them came out to grab a smoke. Mac rolled her shoulders. She took the gun out of her waistband. The safety had been off a while. She walked along the building quietly and quickly, bringing the gun up as the boy noticed and turned to face her. She barely heard her gun as it went off twice. One bullet ripped through the boy's knee while the other hit his shoulder. He was rolling on the ground screaming to the heavens. The noise would bring out the others. One main entrance, one main exit. It would be like shooting sitting ducks.
She crouched down to make herself a smaller target as the boys coming out would have their guns drawn, expecting gunfire. The first one that came out had his arm straight out as if the enemy would be standing out in the open waiting to get shot. She fired another two shots. One hit the kid in the elbow and both he and the gun dropped. The third guy came out but was smart enough to duck and swing out to the direction of the gunshots. Mac felt a bullet ricochet off the warehouse siding as she fired four shots. He was dead before he hit the ground. She got up and walked over to the two screaming boys.
Mac stooped down to the second one she'd shot. She put the gun to his head. He stopped screaming but was visibly in pain. “Where is Luke?” The guy kept his mouth shut. She considered pulling the trigger when the other guy spoke up. “We don't know. He's not expected here tonight.” She didn't take her eyes off the guy with the gun to his head. “Do either of you know where he lives?” She knew the answer to that one but she asked anyway. She wanted to see fear.
The other kid answered again. “No.. look.. we're not that high up.. please..” She pulled the gun away from the guy's head and brought it down on his face, smashing his nose and knocking him out. She walked over to the guy with all the non-answers. He was trying to scramble away but his injuries wouldn't let him. “Has there been a blind girl here?” The guy shook his head but she noticed something in his face. She pointed the gun at his head. “What do you know?”
“Not much I swear.. gossip.. she was being held out of town.. and then...” The guy swallowed hard. “Connor was sent to pick her up...” Mac's blood went cold and she reached down, grabbing the kid by the shirt and the gun under his chin. “Tell Luke I was here. Next place, expect more bodies.” She smashed him across the face then dropped him to the ground. She grabbed the discarded guns and hustled away.
