when I hold out all my love

in my anxious futile human hands

I am really offering

my arts and crafts as a child

with glitter paint and stencil writing

I wrote your name in big block letters

because it’s the only name I can spell

and I want you to tell me you love me

instead, you gasp and proclaim

“it’s perfect!”

which is really all the same

because you said it’s perfect

and so it is

because you said i’m worth it

and so I am.

a pudgy confused excitable beast,

the child in you is innocent and free

the child in you can connect with a lion

can empathize with all living things

knows what it’s like to just Be

sees their reflection in any act of love

asks your favorite color,

to connect your soul to their world

to reflect love back to you.

so when I hold out all my love

made of paper machete pirates and origami doves

in haikus written on sticky notes

with mispelled and well intended words

in the clutter of my creation

I show you all I am

I ask you to see me

and in return, I promise to sit and wait

for you to finish your masterpiece

and when it’s complete

I will gasp and proclaim

“it’s perfect !”
