As a baby tank (only really tanked Labyrinth of the Ancients because I'm terrified of messing up in general and I had my husband and close friend healing); when I level up enough to get Clemency, would it be good practice to ask the healer at the start if they mind if I use it for the sole purpose of maintaining hate? The last thing I want to do is insult them/make them feel that I think they suck.
Well you will have other tools to help you maintain hate once you get to that level. You don’t really have to ask, but I wouldn’t do it too much since Clem in this game isn’t universally used as such by all PLDs like in FFXI heal tanking on Paladin. At least not from what I’ve seen (the PLD would essentially need to OVER heal themselves to get substantial amounts of hate anyway). But you could say something if you choose to go that route of hate gain.
As an added bonus, I consulted our resident Paladom, Ryte Aranethon:
Uhm. I say do it, and don't be afraid to use it. If someone gets touchy, then just lay off, but... idk, I rarely need to use clemency for hate. I mostly use it in 24 man, and have it bound to a mouse over macro so I can toss it at random people who look low. Trick for hate is to pull with a shield lob, then flash a few times once they're in position. Flash has like 1200 enmity potency, that's more than anything.Though I'm thinking now, and using it to grab a bunch of adds that just spawned is also viable, just make sure to flash once they're piled up. Like, the add phase in... the one I'm thinking is the SB last msq trial that's probably spoilers, so let's go with... sophia or sephirot? Clemency yourself to get initial hate, then flash once they're piled up. And if a healer had a problem with that, then idk, they're probably nitpicking. Just don't like, use it during trash pulls and throw shade out of spite. But I've also saved fights if the healer goes down by clemencying the dps, or saved the healer by using it on them, so... bleh. It's hard to say where the line is sometimes, because you're a tank first and foremost
I mean I've explained before to multiple people that it depends on when and how you're using it.
Any healer will be able to tell the difference between helpful clemencies and spiteful clemencies and distrustful clemencies
I will spot a distrustful clemency in like 0.02 seconds because its usually the tank casting it on themselves while they ass is already shielded and i wasted essential dignity on them several times
So I just stick to throwing it at people in other alliances. Oh, and also for activating divine veil
I'll add the primary issue is just tanks not knowing a person's method of healing. It is common even for me to leave people at 60-80% HP when it's safe. especially in non raid content. even more so if the healer is using regens
... why did I type all this out on mobile my laptop is two feet away
