Episode 1045: Farrah and Muscle Training

Translator Notes:

Huh boy. This was another comic where I had to fundamentally change the joke, because the original Japanese joke just plain would not have worked even in the slightest in English. In the original Japanese, Farrah isn’t saying “soldier”; she’s saying kouhai, which is a fairly difficult to precisely translate word that means something along the lines of “junior”, “subordinate”, etc. - basically, it denotes someone who is below someone else in the social heirarchy. Its antonym is the more commonly known word senpai.

The essence of the Japanese joke comes from the fact that the Japanese word for the latissimus dorsi muscle in the lower back is pronounced kouhaikin, the same as kouhai (but written completely differently - 広背筋 vs. 後輩). Kin (筋) is the Japanese word for “muscle”, so Farrah is making the rather silly assertion that training her 広背筋 (kouhaikin) is training her 後輩筋 (kouhai-kin - “kouhai muscle”).

For obvious reasons, there’s absolutely no way that this would work verbatim in English, so I had to figure out what to do about it. I realized in thinking about it that she’s already depicted as training muscles in her back, that “shoulder” sounds a lot like “soldier”, and that the context of Farrah’s kouhai-ness is military in nature... so I decided that the best I could come up with to try to salvage this joke in English was to have her conflating “soldier” and “shoulder” instead of 広背 (kouhai) and 後輩 (kouhai).

Farrah also refers to Katalina as senpai and Katarina-senpai, but, again, there’s really no way to convey that in English without resorting to just using Japanese honoriffics verbatim, which I’ve made a conscious decision not to do, since the official localization also does not do so. So Farrah just calls her “Katalina” in English, and her deference towards Katalina has to come through in side-channel methods instead of by directly saying it.
