It was the birth of the New World, it had been discovered almost 100 years ago, just beginning to be filled with all the Europeans. I don't think the Europeans ever realized how much they actually brought over. Salem was over run by paranoid humans, yes they had probable cause but, so many innocents were put to death. I was so different from them, a mere half breed. Half witch, half vampire, never to be a full vamp until the day I died. I was always about ten to twenty degrees cooler than humans, my heart would only beat once every two hours normally, I could hold my breath for hours if necessary, and my speed, strength, and all of my senses were ten times stronger. When most were drinking red wine, I'd be sipping on blood, while others could stay out all the time in the sun, I had to come in after a few hours. The vampires feared me, the witches hated me, and humans...if they knew, I wouldn't still be here. It was a Monday when he first came to our small town, a Romanian. If I had known all the trouble he was about to cause me, I might have steered clear, might have. I was working at my mothers tavern that night, it was raining and the locals were getting drunk. I was eighteen and used to the atmosphere of the place. I hardly talked while I was there, occasionally slapping a guy when he tried to get carried away. My blackish-blue blue hair cascading down, framing my ivory face. Some had called me the goddess of the night, how close they were to the truth they'd no idea. Other girls tended to envy me, so I was an out cast in the socialites of my age group. When the door opened I was on my way to fill a pitcher with more ale. He came in, raven black hair stuck to his wet face. He had the same color eyes as I did, a glowing blue. They really did glow a bit, you could see them late at night when there was no light to see by. He sat at the bar asking for a glass of red wine.
"Sorry, no wine. We've plenty of ale though." I told him. His eyes widened the tiniest bit as he saw mine. My face was emotionless, a mask.
"A little then." he replied, glancing away. I filled the bottom of a mug and set it in front of him.
"Will that do?"
"Yes, thank you very much."
"Ahaha!!! Go on kids, flirt else where! Rosalie, you'll make some of your mum's patrons mad!" an old man laughed. Stupid drunks. I slapped the man in the face and went on. I could see him snickering at the old fool. I crossed the room and my mom caught my arm.
"Who's that?"
"I don't know." I shrugged.
"Did you see his eyes?" she questioned. I sighed as I nodded. She glanced at him before making me stay close to the bar so I could watch him.
"Who are you?" I whispered from the far end of the long bar, not even the man next to me heard.
"Alexander Ishcov, you?" he whispered back. I grinned and went back to my normal rounds, my mother shooting glares at me from her side of the room.
"Rosalie Morris, nice to meet your acquaintance." I answered. I saw him smile.
"Same. You are the first I've met you know."
"Really, that's something we have in common then." I reply sarcastically.
"So Miss Rosalie, do you attend school here?"
"I may. Depends on the weather." He laughed, causing his neighbors to glance at him strangely.
"Your boss does not seem pleased, was it something I did?"
"No, she told me to watch you. Apparently I'm not close enough."
"Why is that?"
"My mother is strange, that and she noticed your eyes."
"Your mother! Your mother lets you work here?!"
"Obviously. What, do you think I would end up as a damsel in distress?"
"Hence why most mothers don't let daughters work in taverns."
"Yes well we're not like most. Wait until you meet my father."
"I get to meet him so soon in the relationship?" he teased.
"Be careful, I'm sure he can hear you. That and if mother found out....I feel sorry for you." I said, pouring ale into another mans mug. I went back up to the bar to refill my now empty pitcher. He drank his last swig and waited for me to face him.
"How much?" he asked aloud.
"For you, a silver coin." I replied with a grin.
"Rosalie! It is merely a pence dear boy." my mother said, coming to a standstill next to me. I rolled my eyes.
"Your fathers here, he wants to meet your new friend." she said. I laughed at this. He looked up and glanced at the door, gulping.
"I guess you can tell which is the vampire." I whispered. My father glared.
"You were right, I could hear the two of you!" he whispered as he came to our small group. Alexander stood up to greet him, he seemed so short compared to my father.
"My name is Alexander, it's a pleasure to meet you Sir." he said shaking his cold hand.
"What brings you here?" Great, my father was in interrogation mode.
"My family just moved here to get away from our old town in Romania."
"What did you do?"
"A few kids accidentally found out what we are."
"What did-"
"Papa! That's enough!" I scolded. He merely raised his eyebrows at me. "Leave him alone, go talk to his parents if it matters so. Go away, you're scaring people away." I said taking my full pitcher and making a round filling mugs. My father came over, grabbing my upper arm and dragging me back to the bar.
"James that is enough!" Mother gripped. He let me go when I was standing next to Alexander.
"Take her home." he ordered him.
"What!?" Mother almost shouted.
"Elizabeth calm down, I'll take her shift." Father replied.
"Papa, what are you planning?" I accused. He could only grin, walking away. Alexander offered his hand and I took it as we left the building. It was strange, I could never hear my parents when they spoke of things they wish me to be ignorant of.
"So, have you lived here long?" Alexander asked, not bothering to whisper.
"Yes. Since I was about eight, Father travels far for his food." I said, answering the question that was sure to come.
"Ah!" he nodded. "What flower do you like most?"
"Why do you want to know? I'm not so easily won, I promise you that." I smirked.
"Maybe not, but you are my friend no?"
"I suppose."
"I would like to give you a present, from one friend to another."
"Roses, colors do not matter."
"Beautiful." he muttered, looking as though he were imagining something. I could sense a vampire following us, though I said nothing. He would of heard. He must have been a new born, not knowing how to hear heart beats, knowing we were not human. I stopped walking causing Alexander to stop as well. "What is it?" he asked concerned. I blinked at him, turning around.
'You idiot!' I thought.
"Do you really think so?" a voice whispered. Alexander froze.
"You're old!" I gasped.
"So right you are!" a man chuckled from the shadows, close to us.
"Papa!!" I shouted. The man dashed out, placing a hand over my mouth, cutting my cry short.
"Two dhampirs in the same town, how convenient for me. You are my favorite pray, because you know what's coming." he laughed in my ear. Alexander began to growl, getting into a pouncing position. "You really think you can take me?" he asked, slinging me into a wall.
"Papa!!" I whispered again. The man had me up against the wall by my throat. I never saw him move.
"Let her go!!" Alexander growled, tackling him from behind.
"You kids amuse me!" he laughed. Where was my father, how could he not have heard me? The two in front of me began wrestling and I thought of my mother, which suddenly gave me an idea.
"Creature of the night, run away in fright. The sun shines, showing your demise." I casted, saying it so fast it came out as a hum. A necklace I was wearing in the shape of the sun began to glow with the brightness of that in which it imitated. He disappeared. "Alexander! Are you ok?!" I asked breathless.
"I'm fine, but how did you do that?"
"My mother taught it to me."
"Well your mother won't be teaching you anything any more!" the man growled, pinning me to the cold ground.
"Get away from her!" my father hissed. He kicked the man off of me and they began to fight. To fast for us to follow, Alexander and I just sat down next to each other.
"Are you ok?" I whispered.
"Yeah, you?"
"Yeah..." we were to scared to continue. That's when I realized how tired I was, I leaned on his shoulder and the next thing I knew I was in my bed. "Mama?" I called out. I heard the stairs creek under someones feet as they made their way to my room.
"Honey are you ok?!" she asked, my door slamming open.
