The bed dips and Tate is immediately awake, alert and aware of his surrounds. It’s still dark and for a moment, he can’t believe he let himself fall asleep. He must’ve been really tired.
"Lailah?"
He notices the head of dark brown hair and then she’s lying down next to him, her shoulders just brushing his and he’s lying down too.
"What are you doing here?"
She shushes him and he swallows his next question, instead placing his hands behind his head. His eyes are wide and he listens to her breathing, slightly laboured but soon, that too calms. The minutes tick by and he finally gathers enough courage to ask again.
"What are you doing here?"
She does not shush him but neither does she answer. Rolling onto his side to look at her, he realises that she’s asleep. Turning again onto his back, Tate sighs and decides that maybe he should keep watch; just in case.
