I feel like this is Trey when he’s a little bit older probably having learned from past experiences. He sees this more as a benefit for both of you because well he wants the best for you truly.
I think he may even kinda stumble over his words and it may not come out like how he planned but you, knowing him, know what he meant.
Fortunately you agree which honestly put that man out of his misery. Sleepless nights gone of worry and fear. If anything this brings a new understanding to the relationship
