Tsurumaru will barge into her room, calling out and making as much noise as possible as he charges right in.

Hasebe always has a brief struggle with himself in the hallway outside her room. On the one hand he expects her to be a diligent, hardworking saniwa, but on the other hand he has a hard time disturbing her rest. He always ends up deliberating up until the very last second before her chosen wake up time before going in to wake her.

Mitsutada brings her a cup of coffee and sits down next to her futon to chat while she drinks it. He usually makes her late to breakfast though so he doesn’t get wake up duty very often, only on days when she has time to indulge his conversation.

Akashi got wake up duty once and only once. He crawled into her futon with her and was promptly kicked out of her room until further notice.

It's getting chilly here! So...let's take a moment and imagine a saniwa is wandering about the Citadel wrapped in a small blanket in search of their secretary [Kashuu, Tomoegata, Tonbokiri, Souza, Kogitsunemaru]. Once found, said saniwa cuddles up to them without a proper explanation, hoping that the blanket they're wrapped in is self-explanatory of their needs. What would you say are the glorious results?~

Okay I’m so incredibly frustrated right now because it took me like 2 hours of racking my brain to finish this request and the moment I decide to publish it my laptop breaks down? Of course I didn’t save before so I have to write it aaaall over again asdfghjkl slams head against deskAnyway, I hope this is okay, I tried to include some fluff but I’m not really confident that this will be enough, so if you have any complaints or tips please tell me!

Tomoegata

would freeze up immediately before he abruptly runs away, leaving a dumbfounded Saniwa standing in the hallway

returns at the speed of light with a stack of oversized cloaks and blankets,wrapping them into it like a burrito until they are almost unrecognizable under all these layers

motherly hen mode activated

would try to cook them something warm but almost burns down the kitchen and gets kicked by Shokudaikiri

if they tell him that they simply want to be hugged, he will happily comply

makes sure to brag about it later in front of a seething Hasebe

Tonbokiri 

this big teddy bear would give it no second thought and will simply pull them into his strong arms

rubs their back to warm them up

if they’re still cold he’ll accompany them back to their room, and tuck them into the biggest blanket

cares very much for his master and isn’t afraid to show them

Kashuu

poor sword boy gets all flustered and red at the close proximity, only reluctantly wrapping his arms around their back

Does Aruji want me to take care of them? This means I am still loved right?

have mercy with him, he is so insecure and doesn’t know how to react now

will make a big fuss once seeing how cold they are, dragging them to their room and demands from them to dress up in warmer clothes

when the Saniwa tells him that a hug fro him would warm them up more than clothes could do, his brain will malfunction immediately

will hug them eventually after asking 478 times if this is what the Saniwa really wants, a content smile spreading on his face

finds himself not wanting to let them go, clinging to them like a little koala bear

Kogitsunemaru

like Tonbokiri he wouldn’t be that much fazed by the Saniwa suddenly cuddling up to him

he understands that they simply want some physical affection

would gently embrace them and invite them over to his room, where he’ll prepare some tea and cookies for them

wraps themselves into a big blanket, letting them cuddle him to their hearts content

decides to sing a lullaby for them, since he has a very calm and soothing voice, while gently playing with their hair

if the Saniwa falls asleep in his arms, he would just remain still, not wanting to wake them and plants a feathery kiss onto their forehead

Souza

he’s instantly worried, getting all panicky over them

Aruji, are you getting a cold? Do you have a fever? Why are you wandering around in such thin clothing?

after they tell him that they were searching for him and want to be cuddled his face will go beet red, but upon seeing the Saniwa shivering like a lost puppy he just melts into a big puddle

will guide them back to their room while mentally preparing himself for what he is about to do

it’s just cuddling i can do this i can do this

would wrap both of them into a blanket, having them sit on his lap and locked in a comfortable embrace

surprisingly finds himself enjoying this much more than he first anticipated

I hope this gets to you... What are your thoughts about journal entries being used as a montage effect? What about letters between two people showing the progression of time?

I think it can work well!

I’ve had an ask related to this sort of thing before, [HERE].

Essentially, I think it’s important to remember that while these letters/ journal entries/ news articles/ blog posts/ text messages, etc are being used to ‘pass the time’, they also have to be engaging enough to keep the readers interested. 

If all it does is show the progression of time, but there’s a lot of minutiae that doesn’t really tell the reader much or give insight into characters or events, then it can make the section feel like it’s getting bogged down rather than being able to skip through events with only the ‘highlights’ showing.

I think the things that are going to help make these things work is to make sure that they are reflective of the individual quirks and foibles of the characters involved. What the characters care about, what their priorities and interests and likes and dislikes are, is going to show in their writing. As well, their styles of writing are going to be reflective of their individuality as well, and I think it could be helpful to refer to [THIS POST] about writing character voice in working that out.

I know this isn’t really the same thing, but I thought a really interesting way of passing time was in Twilight: New Moon, where months are passed with blank pages to signify Bella’s depression. As many flaws as the series has, there are a few moments like that that are really interesting to me -- and it’s an effective technique, I think, to illustrate a sense of void in the narrator’s life.

their baths together are probably really relaxing/chill (esp when exhausted) but sometimes they’ll fool around with each other like friendly banter, etc

when they get used to it, they probably get a bit clingy in the baths too

they wash each other’s hair! umi likes it when kiyo washes her hair, his hands feel nice

umi probably plays with kiyo’s hair while washing it, making the bubbles look like cat ears or smth and she laughs

after washing up, they sit next to each other in the onsen, leaning their heads against each other or something

they probably talk about their day with each other too

umi talks about the good/happy things that happened during the day, or about her time with the other saniwas (friend sanis!)

their baths together are probably filled with giggles for one reason or another www

Human bodies are interesting...and also sometimes very, very frustrating. Namazuo was the first to experience this particular...issue. He was mounting one of our warhorses when the stallion shied away and unsteated him. He hit the pommel of the saddle in the *exact* wrong way and slid the rest of the way off the horse. None of us believed him when he described the incredible pain...so, because we’re brothers, he decided to share. I was the closest to him so I was the first to, ah, join him--which was really unfair considering I was trying to help him back to his feet. Atsushi was next, and all of our other brothers who were there scattered. It wasn’t hard for them to outrun Namazuo considering he was still hobbling. The following weeks were full of sparring matches where one sword would “accidentally” strike another, until taishou (and MULTIPLE toudan) implemented a rule to preserve decorum and gentlemanly conduct in the dojo.

The nearest toudan always gets called in to...assist...taishou with these matters. I actually rather like spiders and will usually keep the more interesting specimens in my lab for a while before releasing them in the garden. They serve a valuable purpose (pest control) so I don’t kill them unless they’re dangerous, which they rarely are.

Kousetsu, Ishikirimaru, and Yamabushi also do their best to avoid killing them. Kogarasumaru won’t do anything about it, he’ll just watch it as it goes about it’s spider business.

Sayo will kill it no matter what it is. Ookurikara also can’t be bothered with a catch and release program.

Ichinii is rather afraid of spiders and usually fetches me to deal with it when taishou fetches him to deal with it. He’s okay with killing large bugs though, he’s only nervous around spiders. Otegine is less than helpful regardless of if it’s a bug or spider and will run with taishou to find the next nearest toudan. Mitsutada went pale the one time taishou came to him to remove a cockroach from her bath, but he swallowed his hesitation and squished it for her. There was another instance when she called for Shishiou to kill a cockroach in the kitchen, but the bug got aggressive and flew at Shishiou and chased him out of the room. I investigated because of the noise and ended up killing that one for both of them.

My brothers and I asked for a tarantula to keep as a pet and received a firm “NO” from taishou. She tolerates me having specimens in the lab but that’s as far as it goes.

Has your saniwa been able to enjoy the in-Citadel spa day you and the other Toudans have been planning?

We got to surprise her with it recently. After failing to bring home both Mouri and Koryuu and learning about Kotegiri Gou, taishou’s stress level rose to the point that she locked herself into her office and didn’t come out or let anyone in. I managed to peek in long enough to spot her biting her fingers in anxiety and knew it was time to signal the others.

So, the spa squad assembled and prepared everything. Ichinii was the lynch pin–we needed him to charm her into opening the office door and lure her out for a walk, or else all our work would be in vain. Midare joined the effort and helped Ichinii draw her out to the courtyard. There, Hasebe presented taishou with a bouquet of her favorite flowers and Hakata took the key to the office from her. They then went to the office to manage the citadel’s daily business so taishou wouldn’t have anything to worry about.

Ichinii and Midare escorted taishou to her room where the rest of the team was waiting. Even though it was late in the day it was still hot and sunny outside so Kashuu and I set up the massage table and chair in her room. We had taishou change into a light summer yukata behind the screen in her room, then Mikazuki got to work, giving her a deep tissue back massage. Her shoulders were incredibly tight, and I feel guilty for waiting as long as we did to surprise her–but I watched Mikazuki work and learned a few techniques I’ll be sure to use for her in the future. When Mikazuki was done with her back massage he was too tired to do a foot massage as well, so we sent Midare to fetch Tonbokiri while I gave taishou a head and neck massage and worked on her shoulders a little more. And, while I was doing that, Kashuu painted her fingernails with his Shinsengumi blue polish.

Mitsutada came by at this point and dropped off a tray of homegrown fruits cut into cute shapes like hearts and flowers and a box of luxury chocolates he bought with his own money while on expedition. Taikogane tagged along with him to carry glasses and a pitcher of iced cucumber water, and Mitsutada took the time to arrange the snacks and water and Hasebe’s flowers into a lovely arrangement on taishou’s side table.

Tonbokiri arrived right after Mitsutada went back to the kitchen and we put his strong, gentle hands to work on taishou’s foot massage. Kashuu unveiled his new face mask recipe that he mixed in my lab and gently applied it to taishou’s face as Tonbokiri rubbed her feet. I pulled two slices of cucumber out of the water and we used them to complete the mask. When Tonbokiri was done with her foot massage Kashuu moved in and painted her toes to match her fingers. Kasen, who was not part of the initial planning but caught wind of what was happening anyway, stopped by and read taishou some poetry while she relaxed and waited for the polish to set.

Midare was in charge of prepping the onsen while we attended taishou indoors. He and Ichinii collected fresh pink roses from the garden and scattered the petals both around the pool and in the water itself. (Pink is the color of appreciation and gratitude, after all.) By the time we were done inside evening was falling so Midare and Ichinii lit candles around the onsen. Once the polish was dry we escorted taishou out to the onsen and Kashuu got to reveal the onsen-safe bath bombs I helped him develop. As the water fizzed and the scent of roses filled the air all of the toudan bowed out to leave her to her bath for as long as she liked. (Midare wanted to join her but Ichinii dragged him out as unobtrusively as possible.)
