Everyone had known that it would not be easy to take down the Black Org. Kaito and Shinichi were no exception. It seems, however, that the two had still managed to underestimate the crows.
A gunshot rang out and both boys ducked for cover.
“Kaito?” Shinichi’s voice held worry, but determination. Kaito smiled softly at the wall in front of him. Shin-chan was amazing.
“I’m good!” The shooting stopped, and both boys paused for only a second before coming out from behind their cover. Kaito aimed his card gun at one of the five men, but he dodged the projectile. He fired off more shots, one after another, but the crows managed to avoid sustaining any serious injuries, or getting backed into a corner and stuck to a wall. Out of the corner of his eye, Kaito saw Shinichi creeping silently along the edge of the room. He kept his face blank, not risking giving Shinichi away by smiling. Another bullet flew by Kaito, and he had no choice but to drop back behind a tipped-over table. “If everyone else isn’t doing better than us, we’re in serious trouble,” Kaito grumbled quietly.
They’d planned for a struggle once they’d gotten in; just not one of this magnitude. Kaito took a deep breath, thought briefly of Shinichi sliding along the far wall, and plastered on his KID grin. He shot up from behind the table, gard gun at the ready, and jumped around the room with the same efficiency as dodging Aoko’s mop. He was doing well, keeping the men busy and away from Shinichi while avoiding the bullets they fired at him.
Then he heard Shinichi give a surprised cry, and glanced over to see one of the crows had gotten him in a choke hold. Kaito’s grin faded, his expression turning the definition of dangerous. He wouldn’t be able to tell anyone, later, what exactly he did next; everything blurring behind the haze of red anger. All Kaito really knows is that Shinichi is safe by his side, and the man who had grabbed him was lying unconscious and appeared to have a bump on his head. He let go of Shinichi, the two jumping right back into the fight. The four men were giving them trouble, and Kaito was practically vibrating with his desire to see them behind bars once and for all. In an effort to calm his anger at least a little, Kaito started to banter with Shinichi while they fought.
“Shin-chan, these guys are annoying.”
“I mean, if they would just admit defeat already, then we’d have time to plan a nice evening!” Kaito caught a glimpse of Shinichi as he blushed, a smirk making its way onto his boyfriends face.
“I’m sure you’re skilled enough to find time to plan one anyways, once we finish this.”
“Shut up, ya brats!” One of the men was clearly fed up with the conversation already, and Kaito smirked at him.
“Is that a challenge, Meitantei?”
“An observation. You’ve done much more complicated things with such short notice, planning a date night is hardly going to stump you.” Kaito cackled at that, and the man who’d yelled at them earlier turned to him in anger. It gave Shinichi the opening he needed to hit him with a dart from his watch, knocking him out cold. Two down, Three to go.
“You have a point there, Shin-chan.” Guns started firing in earnest, and the two were forced to duck for cover again. “I don’t think these guys like us, Shinichi!”
“You think?” Came the detective’s sarcastic response. The conversation died there, bullets flying as the two boys struggled to avoid being shot while attempting to incapacitate the three remaining Crows. Another round of heavy fire, and Kaito moves a little too slowly; a bullet grazing his left arm and forcing him to drop behind the table. “Kaito!”
“Hey Shinichi?” Kaito called back calmly. He continued before the detective had time to respond. “Will you marry me?” There was a distinct silence from his boyfriend, and the gunshots paused for a moment. Either the gunmen were reloading, or something was happening.
“What are you saying all of a sudden?” Shinichi’s voice called out from somewhere to Kaito’s right.
“I want to marry you, Shin-chan.”
“And you’re asking now?” Kaito chuckled dryly.
“I figured we both get ourselves into dangerous situations so often, better to ask now. Who knows if I’ll have time for a grand gesture, when our dates so often include someone being murdered?” Kaito grimaced when he realized how that sounded, he didn’t blame Shinichi for it, and he wasn’t upset at him for helping solve the murders when they happen. He heard Shinichi start to speak, but the response was interrupted by the door being slammed open to allow a swarm of FBI agents into the room. There was shouting, a few gunshots, and then everyone was confirming that all the Crows had been captured. The sounds of the immediate aftermath of the takedown drowned out any chance of Kaito hearing if Shinichi called back a response.
“Kaito,” Shinichi’s voice sounded from Kaito’s side just as the detective knelt beside him. Kaito was holding his left arm, pressing his hand over the graze wound to try and slow the bleeding. Shinichi looked at him for a moment, both just silently watching each other, before a soft and shy smile appeared on the detective’s face. He pressed one of his hands over Kaito’s, blood still seeping through and coating their fingers, and blushed.
“Of course I’ll marry you, you crazy thief.” Kaito’s face lit up in a smile, and Shinichi raised his free arm in the air, calling out the need for medical attention. As soon as Shinichi turned back to him, Kaito quickly pushed himself forward, catching Shin-chan by surprise with a kiss. The two broke apart shortly after, and Kaito couldn’t have hidden his smile if he tried.
“I guess I have a date to plan, Meitantei.”
