My current read is The Core, the latest novel in Peter V. Brett’s Demon Cycle series. I love this series! It’s about the struggle between humanity and corelings. Corelings are various types of demons who appear on the surface at night to wreak havoc and kill/eat people. It’s a beautifully developed series with a world full of myth, history, solid characters and adventure.
The series is told through the perspective of multiple characters, but is centered on Arlen Bales a.k.a The Warded Man; who is fed up with fearing the night and begins to paint wards onto his skin. Wards are magical symbols created by humanity but the knowledge of them has been lost to time. They have various uses such as repelling or killing demons, hardening, healing, producing wind or fire, etc. Anyway Arlen is basically a badass; he is the first human to put wards directly on his skin, resulting in him absorbing magic (badass alert!). With this new power he begins to brave the night and battle demons. Through his actions Arlen inadvertently becomes a symbol of prophecy and power for humanity, spurring a war against the corelings.
This series will change your life! Not only will it take you on an M rated Harry Potter-esque journey packed with bloody intense fighting scenes, it also has characters that are so in depth and complex you start to think your reading actual events. PLUS the underlying theme expresses the importance of people banding together and acknowledging each other’s humanity. Do yourself a favor and read this series!
P.S,
The women are the real power in the series and inspired me to start martial arts.
Andrenne is a shameless fantasy/sci-fi reader. She loves to pet other people’s dogs and can’t wait to have her own. When she’s not plotting a dog heist she’s gaming or adventuring.
