14. What books do you want to finish before the year is over?

Oof I have at least 30 books on my 2022 list, so I'll just give the Jan-March section: Anna Karenina, The Making of Biblical Womanhood, Jesus and John Wayne, the Trial, A Grief Observed, the Eclogues of Virgil, The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, and (rereading) The Fellowship of the Ring.

24. Did you DNF anything? Why?

Two off the top of my head. Catch Me If You Can by Frank Abagnale Jr was the first one; I didn't even finish Ch 1. He just comes off as such an irredeemable ass who whines about the suboptimal conditions of his childhood that led him to a life of high profile theft, but also brags about scamming his dad at 16 and getting away with all this shit? As if it's because he was just that smart and not because he was a rich white kid with a rich white dad who had close ties to both the Republican Party and the local authorities who constantly let him off easy. Get fucked, Frank.

As for the second - bro I was reading The Last Tsar by Edvard Radzinsky and I was SO Excited because I love Russian history and especially the late Imperial period. Unfortunately, though he be an excellent archivist, Radzinsky lacks the technical skills to compile his primary sources into a readable, down-to-earth secondary one. His story begins with Nicholas II's birth and - i fuck w you not - mentions his eventual demise almost every single page, and in the most dramatic way possible. He treats everything so intensely and the resulting narrative is such a slog to get through :(

Beneath his technical ineptitude, I just blatantly disagreed with the case he made. Whenever Radzinsky talks about why the Empire collapsed and what Nicholas could have done to prevent it, he always focuses on Nicholas's personal failings and his habitual avoidance - never on the... pretty objectively poor conditions the monarchy inflicted and perpetuated against the Russian people. Which made me feel. Icky. Also, I noticed he was 100% of the time harsher on the women than on the men, in terms of their participation in the collapse of the dynasty. Which made me feel. Very very Icky.
