A brief introduction to the world of Ilmari’s Moon
A long, long time ago there was an entity that suddenly morphed into existence. It was formless, simply a consciousness floating through the void of the universe completely and utterly alone, until it wasn’t.
It found a little rock, orbiting a little light. There were a lot of other rocks orbiting this light, but this rock seemed different. it felt like it had… life. the entity was drawn to it, feeling a desire to look closer, until it saw little specks moving around on it. Wandering around on the messy green carpets, and swimming through a ground that seemed to be solid but not.
It wanted to learn more about this strange little rock, so it processed itself a form, a form of seemingly pure light. Descending down to the rock, it noticed similarities and differences between these little organisms it deemed “species”. Still yearning to learn more about life other than itself, from its own light it created beings known as the Lychinus, beings of pure light just as the entity, although not as bright. They seemed to be… different colours? The primary colours of light. Green, the pure life force of creatures. Red, the flesh and blood that made them. And Blue, their mind and behaviours. The entity deemed these the “guardians” of this place, gifting the Lychinus with forms resembling the creatures that lived there, a Wolf, a Bobcat, and a Fox respectively.
The entity did not wish to engage with the inhabitants of the rock itself, and left that responsibility to the guardians. With the Lychinus’ observations of the floating rock they now deemed “Earth”, they noticed strange patterns in animals, feeling a dark presence in them. With pure light, there must be pure darkness. From this came the Caligo, a species entirely dedicated to killing and preying on the life force of others. Stalking and waiting for the perfect moment to strike, taking over the body of the creature and living life as them.
The Lychinus and Caligo fought for centuries, before the entity decided to intervene and banished the Caligo to a small island in the vast expanse of ocean, isolating them from the rest of the planet. This tired the entity, causing it to enter a dormant state. Green, being the most powerful of the three Lychinus, was granted the responsibility of overseering the planet and the other Lychinus.
Over time, the organisms began to change and develop, eventually creating humans. The Lychinus’ forms began to change too, they developed more bipedal forms to blend in with this new, interesting organism. Red wanted to know more about the physical properties of these humans, and began kidnapping and murdering many, simply inspecting their bodies. Blue wanted to know what it was like to be human, and made deep emotional bonds with many, eventually having children with most. This angered Green, as they were simply there to watch and observe, not engage. Green created a new substance later known as Ambrozia, it’s entire purpose being to drive any and all Lychinus to insanity upon contact, this strange substance would only be created when a human is physically harmed by a Lychinus.
Upon death, the human’s blood would immediately liquefy, turning into a bright green viscous bile consisting entirely of the human’s life force. This prevented Red from furthering his “experiments”. Angered, Red began to engage with the humans emotionally, as Blue had. Green knew it couldn’t do anything to prevent them from doing this, but left the creation of Ambrozia possible.
This situation left the relationships between the Primary Lychinus shattered, they stopped working together and began to do their own things. Soon, many problems began to arise. The humans had started exploring the world, which meant two things. One, they might risk coming across the land that Caligo were banished to, and two, different groups of humans began to interact, causing strange births of new Lychinus as Red and Blue’s DNA were mixed across generations. They seemed to never be any primary colours, instead creating secondary colours of the mix.
To hopefully prevent any humans from making contact with the Caligo, the Lychinus agreed to make a new land surrounding the island holding the Caligo captive, and to keep watch. This left the rest of the world untouched by Lychinus hands from then on, their energy and resources being used to stop any attempt at escape from any Caligo. Eventually, humans did make it to the island, their natural curiosity drawn to the supernatural feel of the place. A specific individual, who’s name currently remains unknown, wanted to know more. He created a laboratory, finding this isolated land the perfect location to keep it hidden. Obviously this drew the attention of the Lychinus, and of course the Caligo.
Soon the Lychinus began to go missing. First the secondary’s, who weren’t very powerful, then Blue, the weakest of the three Primaries. Green being the most powerful, set off to search for Blue, to no avail, soon going missing itself. All who was left was Red, who decided it would be best to just blend in and lay low, seemingly going missing too…
