oh my goodness tell me more about lydia. what is this mysterious family secret i’m so intrigued by that when paired with the (Abernathy) behind her name
very cliche like you wouldn't believe.. lydia was made at the height of my haymitch obsession. the lore is that haymitch spent a few years for educational reasons in his 20s within the capitol, since he didn't exactly feel like he belonged in twelve. insert panemian education lore & more universities in the capitol post-50th, and he meets luanne harrow (socialite who takes the same course as him.)
still seeking the sort of love that died with arlene, they end up dating and have a long-term fling for a few years. luanne very suddenly cuts him off after a while, and basically drops off the face of the earth. (reasoning for this is that very simply; her parents don't approve of her relationships with anyone district.) at this time she goes through a totally cryptic pregnancy, and here comes lydia, who no one knew about.
severed from the man she wanted to be with, luanne becomes a bit of a recluse and is forced to hide/erase any of haymitch's attempts to reach her. because yeah, he eventually does enough nagging to find out. so for a few years, he's frantically mailing and sending luanne stuff for lydia, since he's in a rut about not physically being able to be there for her. in the end, he eventually stops, and luanne stockpiles all of the things he sent in some secluded part of the home.
lydia gets old enough to find these, but she has no idea who sent them/who her father is. so while pursuing her own course at university, she tries to trace back the letters to whoever this might be. does she find him? who knows!

does Luanne face any issues regarding the lack of father during her pregnancy? Like one would modern day ignoring the issues that would come with the father being district while she from the captiol. Sorry if this is worded weird or doesn’t make sense.

the knowledge that the father is district is only known to luanne and her parents, so it's easy to pass things off as a reckless fling that went the wrong way. although, she was miserable all through both terms — depressive and near suicidal from the loss of such an impactful relationship. and the letters from her lover didn't help; not when they were forcibly stowed away and left unread for years after lydia's eventual birth. all she had was her parents and the avoxes in the house; since luanne had struggled to make any other meaningful relationships within her time at the university.
