My cousin (who's crowning fifty) wants red peppers and Maraschino cherries in his quiche for Thanksgiving. I wish I was making this up, but I'm not.
Please Stop Invalidating People Because of Their Interpretation of the Finale
I’m probably going to lose some followers for this but, fuck it. I’ve been seeing a lot of people who are saying things like “don’t be negative” or “I can’t believe you didn’t like the finale” or “if you’re really mad about it, then you weren’t really watching the show” or “you’re just upset because you didn’t get what you wanted” and I’m fed up with it.
Let me start with this: everyone interprets things differently.
Let me repeat that.
Everyone interprets things differently.
We were all watching the same show, but we all have our different interpretations of it. That’s why one person may view Dean Winchester and Castiel being romantically head-over-heels in love with one another and another may view it as entirely platonic. It’s why one person may think that John Winchester was trying his best while another may think that he’s the worst father on the planet. It’s why one person may have loved the finale and the other person may have thought that it was the worst ending since Game of Thrones (or even worse than GoT). Everyone has watched the same show, but it’s different to each one of us.
I hated the finale. Hated it. The only part I liked was the montage at the beginning and the bridge scene at the very end. From my interpretation, everything in between was poorly thought out, unorganized, and left so many questions unanswered. For others, they may not have viewed it that way -- and that’s okay.
But here’s the deal: it’s not okay to invalidate the feelings of others. You loved the finale? Great! I am happy for you, and I wish I could feel just an ounce of that satisfaction. But asking people not to be negative after years of being invested in a T.V. show that ended with an extremely unsatisfying ending for them, even if it wasn’t unsatisfying for you, or telling people things like “you’re just throwing a tantrum because you didn’t get what you wanted” or “you must not have been watching the show if you’re mad about how it ended” is extremely invalidating.
We’re all mourning the Winchesters, and we’re all mourning Supernatural. For those of you that found satisfaction in that finale, you’re mourning, but your years of participation that you have put into this fandom were somewhat satisfied. For those of us who hated the finale -- we don’t know what that feels like. I promise, if I could find a way to actually be happy with how Supernatural ended, I would have found it already. But to me, there were too many unanswered questions. There was too much that didn’t make any sense. I’ve picked this episode apart trying to see if the pros outweighed the cons so I could feel just a seed of satisfaction, but I haven’t been able to. I’m truly disappointed with it, and I probably will be for a long time. And I should be allowed to be disappointed about it without having people tell me that I’m not a “real fan” because of my dissatisfaction. Because to you, the Dean Winchester that you interpreted may have gotten the ending he wanted. But to me, the Dean Winchester that I interpreted deserved so much more. Because to you, the show that you interpreted has always revolved around Sam and Dean. But to me, the show that I interpreted has always revolved around the brothers and the family that they’d built around them.
Just because you are happy with the ending does not mean that it invalidates all of us who are disappointed, upset, or angry with it. It does not mean that we aren’t just as invested, or that we don’t love the show and the fandom and the cast as much as you do. It just means that the ending we interpreted was very different than the ending you interpreted. And that’s okay.
So please, for the love of Jack, let people be upset. Let people be disappointed and angry. We have the right to do that as much as you have the right to be satisfied and happy.
At the end of the day, though, it’s been a rough week for all of us. We’re all upset, one way or another, because it’s over (for now, fingers crossed). Let’s try to understand one another instead of furthering the divide. I am more than willing to civilly and respectfully discuss our different interpretations of the finale, but I will not put up with being invalidated because of the way I interpreted it.
All that being said, if you found satisfaction in the finale, I’m very jealous. I am happy you found that and you are completely validated in feeling that way (and no, I promise I’m not being sarcastic). If you’re just as disappointed as I am, you are also completely validated in feeling that way and we’ll get through it with all the fix-it fics we can write.
So, let’s spread some love... because we all need it right now.
This tattoo has a lot of meanings for me. Marvel is the reason I started writing, the reason I met amazing people who I will carry with me forever.
Besides being a huge Stucky shipper, I am a huge Sebastian Stan fan, that’s why I wanted this to be written by him.
I couldn’t get the line myself but @wxntersoldiers did, that is why this is even more special. Thank you again for doing this for me, I will never ever forget it. I love you with my wholeass heart, but you know that already.
Being a Seb fan has helped me get through a lot this past year and I want to always remember how and what I felt.
