Idk if you're still taking those writing prompts, but if you are, #40 with young Earendil & Elwing (fluffy)? <3
So long as the prompt list is pinned, I'm always taking prompts! And this is a really sweet one, how could I not write it?
From this prompt list.
40 - "Its raining! Come on [name], let's go play!"
Eärendil is a free spirit, his mother always tells him. It's easy enough to see, for Eärendil has always been easy with smiles, even after Gondolin fell and his Uncle had-
Eärendil likes to look on the positive side of things. It's a trait he inherited from both his parents and in such an adverse world as this, he thinks it's quite useful actually.
For example, he could be sad right now that his home was gone and his grandfather and almost all his friends were with Mandos now, but he prefers to think about how if this hadn't happened, Eärendil would never have met Elwing.
And Elwing, in Eärendil's opinion, is worth it.
Elwing has lost her home and her friends and her family too, and Elwing is very melancholy.
She's sad and Eärendil has made it his personal mission to cheer her up: after all, if she is the one being sad for the both of them then he must be the one to be happy for them.
The day is grey and their tutors have kept them inside since they woke up, working on their maths. Elwing has been staring out the window wistfully and Eärendil can feel the oncoming storm against his skin and can't sit still.
Evranin gave up on them learning anything sometime around lunchtime, and now she sits by the fire with her knitting.
Eärendil is sitting next to Elwing in the window seat, pretending to read his book. Really, he just wanted to be near his friend and he knows her well enough to be sure she wouldn't want to play with his wooden boats.
And then the first raindrops hit the window.
Eärendil has always liked the rain. There's something electric about heavy water falling from the sky and landing against his skin and it's utterly thrilling.
"It's raining!" He exclaims, scrambling up to his knees to press his face against the glass. The sea outside is a churning mass of grey and blue and a lightning bolt threads the sky somewhere far out towards the horizon.
He jumps up at the following thunder and turns, bright-eyed, to Elwing. She blinks, a little taken aback by his excitement, before her face breaks out into a tentative smile.
"Come on, Elwing, let's go play!"
She nods, the smile growing stronger and surer, and lets Eärendil take her wrist to drag her out of the room and down the spiral staircase.
They pass Meleth, on her way up with a pot of something warm and delicious, and Eärendil only pauses long enough to apologise for nearly overbalancing her. They skid through corridors, past servants and courtiers and everyone in between and have nearly made it to freedom before strong arms swing down and pick him up.
"Oh no you don't," his father says, throwing him over his shoulder.
Eärendil shrieks. "Da! This is so unfair!"
"Mhm? It won't be unfair when you both catch a cold."
"Dressed like this, you absolutely will. And you shouldn't go near the rough sea without an adult, you both know that." Tuor puts him back down on his feet next to Elwing and smiles. "How about we get you both coats and hats and boots and then we can go out?"
"But Da!" Eärendil complains but it's mostly for show as he lets himself be bundled up into the waterproofed fabric and have his feet shoved into the welly boots.
He and Elwing make quite the pair, both dressed in bright yellow, but his father doesn't look like he'll agree to let them take any of this stuff off.
"Now, Elwing - you take my right hand - and Eärendil - you take my left. There, now we're all set."
Elwing opens the door and it bangs open with the wind. A maid walking past exclaims as the pile of clothes she's carrying threatens to turn over.
"Sorry!" Tuor calls over his shoulder but Eärendil doesn't let him hang around in that hallway. He's sure the maid will be fine and he wants to see the sea before they're inevitably told it'll be too dangerous.
He shares a look with Elwing as the wind tears at their clothes and she is grinning.
She must feel it too, Eärendil decides, the electricity before the storm. It's nice to have someone to share that with.

ooh i'd love to hear about Meril/Cullorusse if you feel like rambling about her!
Ok so I did talk about her a bit here if you're interested and as I did quite a bit on her backstory there, I'll go into her personality and relationships a bit here. I've also changed a few things about her story from this post, so there will be some inaccuracies between the two posts. (She was found in this list of OCs)
So, Meril has four older half siblings (or adopted siblings or something, I'm still not sure on the details):
Her eldest brother Doron is an adult and living in Doriath with his wife by the time of Meril's birth and they haven't really interacted all that much until far later in Meril's life when she's princess of the woodland realm in the second age and he joins the court there after spending some time in Lindon. Even then, their relationship is not that close, however, when he dies in the attack on the Black Gate, Meril fosters his young daughter Tauriel for him.
Her eldest sister Eirien is also fully grown by the time Meril is born but she lives with her mother still as she was helping her with raising the twins and then just never left. Eirien is subsequently quite like a third parental figure in Meril's life and as Eirien dies in Dagor Bragollach, they don't ever grow out of that sort of relationship until they meet again in Valinor and they have to develop it.
The twins, Tathar and Neldor, are just about grown up when Meril is born. They are hunters of the green elves and when they're around they're your typical annoying older brothers - although Tathar does have a tendency to be a lot kinder than his twin. They die protecting each other in the Nirnaeth and as they were Meril's closest siblings, their death left the biggest impact on Meril.
Meril's parents are Amras and Hethest, the daughter of Denethor, who led her father's people soon after her father's death although she never took his title:
Meril loves and respects her mother greatly. She brought the remnants of their people back together and is a good mother. Meril would have followed her eastwards after the Nirnaeth had she not already been sent to the Havens. Hethest called her Drúbridhir, Woodland Queen, in their tongue.
Meril has an interesting relationship with her father. She loves him dearly (and takes after him quite a bit) but she and he haven't always been that great at talking about anything much. He's very much a strange mythical figure in her memory compared to her mother's far more steady presence. He called her Cullorussë, Red Gold Head of Hair, partly after the brother he lost.
Meril has her six uncles on her father's side and her mother also has a sibling, Teliweg:
The only one of her uncles Meril has a properly positive relationship with before she meets her family again across the sea is Caranthir who lives close to them and with whom her people sheltered after Dagor Bragollach. She's a little scared of him at first as he tends to appear as a very hairy, uptight Ñoldorin lord at first but when she got to know him (and Nibenaes, his daughter), it was quite a good relationship, mostly built off of Meril's interest in how his governing differed to her parents.
Celegorm and Curufin she never properly meets. In the short time that all the Fëanorians were at Amon Ereb, preparing for Doriath, Meril avoided almost all contact with them, living mostly as a shadow in other places of the Keep.
Maedhros she is well and truly terrified of (at least until she meets him again) because he's tall and imposing and doesn't exactly have time to smile at her loads - nor is he completely aware that Meril is his niece (the only one of his brother's Amras told was Caranthir who ain't no snitch) although he does have his suspicions.
Maglor is also quite scary to Meril although she mostly ends up feeling quite a bit of pity for him by the time she last sees him in the First Age. She mostly sees him as rather sad and lonely and this slightly more sympathetic view towards him does mean that she (along with Nibenaes and her friends) does help Elrond search him down during Elrond's early-mid second age crisis.
Amrod is dead by the time Meril is born but he is also the only reborn FThe only one of her uncles Meril has a properly positive relationship with before she meets her family again across the sea is Caranthir who lives close to them and with whom her people sheltered after Dagor Bragollach. She mostly sees him as rather sad and lonely and this slightly more sympathetic view towards him does mean that she (along with Nibenaes and her friends) does help Elrond search him down during Elrond's early-mid second age crisis.
Amrod is dead when Meril is born but when she sails, he meets her at the docks with her grandmother as he's really the only reborn Fëanorian at this point and she does get to know him and her Ñoldorin heritage this way.
Teliweg lives with their sister and is the one who gave Meril the name Meril. They were Meril's caretaker when both her parents were busy and Eirien could not look after her. They died in Dagor Bragollach. Meril has fond memories of Teliweg's company but that's about it.
So Meril married Thranduil and he has a father, a mother and a whole sister floating around:
Meril's already quite familiar with Thranduil's mother. She's the sister of Caranthir's second-in-command and Crinthammos likes to talk about her sister and cousins a lot. The woman herself is quite like Hethest in how she holds herself and directs people and Meril gets quite attached to her due to this.
Oropher takes a moment to warm up to her and vice versa. Meril's quite bright and bubbly, particularly when she was younger, and Oropher is basically the complete opposite and does not appreciate her bounciness just as she does not appreciate him being rather smothering. However, they do gain a mutual understanding for Thranduil's sake.
Thranduil's sister, Lithuian, is wild - like she has no inhibitions and no desire to have any inhibitions. The reason Thranduil and Meril meet is because they have to fight off a small dragon Lithuian somehow managed to find and enrage. She dies doing something reckless in the second age, leaving her young son behind in Thranduil and Meril's care.
And Meril has four children (six, counting the niece and nephew she ends up taking into the fold):
Erthilia is the most formal of her siblings. A very well behaved princess with very good manners and a particular skill for organising people, she doesn't leave the forest a lot instead taking on a role secondary to her father. She is far closer to her father than her mother and doesn't regularly spend a lot of time with her but they do still sometimes go out for days where they have a picnic in the woods or something and catch up.
Naudon is a healer who learned from Elrond in later ages. He is by far the most quiet and introverted of most of his family and closer to his grandfather than to anyone else so he and his mother are really not that close in later years. They simply don't understand each other: although Meril would go to the ends of the earth to make Naudon happy, even if she is unsure what that is.
Navril takes after her mother a great deal, in both looks and personality, although she does have a leaning towards arguing rather than bringing out a weapon straight away. Meril taught her to hunt and fire a bow and pretty much everything she learned at a young age and they are perhaps the closest out of all Meril's children.
Legolas is the baby of the family and his mother still treats him a little bit like that. Even though there's barely much of a difference in age between him and Navril, it's rather difficult for Meril to see him as much more than a precocious toddler. That being said, much of his deep desire to cherish his friends and his skill with a bow come from her as he was quite often on the same trips that Meril pulled Navril on.
Meril also has quite a few friends over the ages that she makes through various means:
There's her closest childhood friend who managed to survive the years of danger that Meril ended up in, an elf born around the same time as her by the name of Torlith. Torlith becomes her closest advisor when she officially becomes Queen and has always been by her side as the only real servant that Meril has, opting not to ever have handmaids in the way Melian had, simply finding no need or desire for them. Torlith is the only person who Meril could possibly consider as closer to her than Thranduil or her children.
Nibenaes, the daughter of Caranthir and her cousin, is one of the first friends she ever made outside of her mother's people. Nibenaes was older than her by a few decades and due to her mannish blood, also looked a fair bit older and took on a big-sisterly roll when their two people's came together in the wake of Dagor Bragollach. Meril always tried to keep in contact by letter with Nibenaes if she could, up until Nibenaes' death at the Last Alliance.
Elrond, another cousin of hers, was also a close friend. She first met him (and Elros) while she was staying with her Uncle's in their keep and trying to work up the nerve to leave her home and travel the dangerous wilderness of Beleriand to find the Havens of Sirion. She was possibly the most sane person either of the twins was in constant contact with and so she was something of a dear friend to the both of them by the time she left with them and a few other Fëanorian supporters. Like Nibenaes, she always tried to keep in contact with him through the ages. She was a comfort to him when Celebrían died and eventually, they sailed on the same ship.
She's friends with Celebrían and Celeborn and quite a lot of Doriath survivors through her husband, although she's not particularly close with many of them (except perhaps Celebrían, for whom she has quite a fondness - because who isn't a little fond of Celebrían?)
Meril does not have quite the same fight response that her younger daughter has to Galadriel (long story) but she is perhaps a little cold with her. It's less to do with Galadriel and more to do with Meril's distaste of her own Noldorin heritage and how she dislikes how Galadriel has mixed Noldorin culture into the local Silvan culture of Lothlórien and so she is difficult on purpose if Galadriel is there. (In a side note, I love Galadriel)
She was one of Círdan's orphanage at the end of the First Age (which basically means, Círdan adopted like every elfling with no parents and until a few years into the second age, they were just vibin')
But yeah, I think that's it! If you wanna ask any questions about anything that doesn't make sense or you would like clarification on, I would be happy to answer!
A little OC writing for @lyndeth-halfelven based off their OC Faenel to celebrate 300 followers. She's basically all I could ever want in an OC and I love her.
Somehow, Faenel's shop managed to avoid the worst of the damage.
The attack had left a good portion of the city in ruins but her little seamstresses - tucked between the local pub and a small grocers - had only lost a few roof tiles and one of the windows had smashed in.
Faenel should feel relieved that she has so little rebuilding to do but instead she just feels numb.
Miri and Lothion are alright: Faenel had gone straight away to find her sister at the first signs of an attack and had only just managed to get away to check on the shop.
But there are so many other people in the city and they can't all have been so lucky. How many of her regular customers won't be coming back? How many of her neighbours will she never see again? And what of her friends?
She should walk inside, see what of her fabrics and supplies were ruined, get the shop up and running again for the inevitable flood of repairs she was going to need to do. She should take this moment of calm after the storm to put things in order and get ready for whatever came next.
Faenel does not do that.
She turns from her shop, fairly sure that it will survive another hour or two without her there, and makes her way down the street.
Lagreth will be giving her aunt a helping hand in the houses of healing and Turgon...well, Turgon was in the army and who knew what had become of him. Faenel did not want to think about what had become of him.
But Hithiel lives just down the road and if she survived, then she would be in her bakery.
Hithiel is stronger than Faenel after all: she surely must have managed to pluck up the courage to begin fixing up her bakery in a way Faenel had not.
The door is closed when Faenel arrives. The sign that used to hang above it had fallen off and lay discarded a few feet away and while the windows were similarly as broken as Faenel's, the curtains inside were closed and Faenel could not see inside.
She knocks on the door.
There's no reply so she knocks again.
And again and again and again, pausing a minute each time, until finally the bolt inside is drawn back and the door wrenched open.
Hithiel looks furious, scowling darkly, but her eyes are red-rimmed and her hair flying away in every which way.
"What do you-" She starts, anger making her voice shaky, but then some of the anger clears. "Oh, Faenel. I thought you'd be with your sister."
"I was. Came back to look at the shop."
They stand there, quiet and still in a city that's silently mourning.
Hithiel laughs. She sounds exhausted. "It's been one hell of a week," she says and Faenel has to bite her lip to stop hysteria from bubbling up.
"Yep, quite surprised we made it this far."
"But we did," Hithiel adds, "we did survive. Think of that Fae - we survived."
"Yeah, yeah we did." Faenel can feel a smile creeping onto her face. It still hovers in the back of her mind, what they have lost and what insurmountable work they have to do to gain it back, but Hithiel has a contagious hope. "Well, I just wanted to check up on you, since everyone else I can't. I'd better get back to the shop."
"Not tonight," Hithiel has a wild glee in her eyes. "Tonight we drink wine and be thankful we're still alive. Tomorrow we can worry and be sensible. I think we deserve a little wildness after all of that."
Honestly, going back to the shop sounds exhausting and miserable to Faenel right now. She can see a fire roaring in the fireplace behind her friend and the warmth of it is far more appealing.
"Alright, you win."
Hithiel's shoulders sag in relief. "Good. An evening alone was not appealing to me in any way. Now, what do you feel about that bottle of wine I stole from your sister's wedding?"
"So that's where that went! You are incorrigible," Faenel says and she feels the most human she has felt since the attack ended.
She steps into the warm and the door closes behind her.
For your book description: "They had a bright smile that was kind but also had a clever edge to it, the sort of smile a faerie queen wore as she held court, warm and whimsical, but seeing everything."
Jdksnckwbsj ok this is so pretty, genuinely the vibe I always go for - thank you so much :))
