This song is a classic!

Not because of my love for Aaliyah, but because of the message. We all get knocked down in life, but don’t stay down for too long. Get back up, dust yourself off and try again. 

I grew up with her music and when I heard of her passing, I cried. She, like Tupac, was real. She was beautiful, talented, stylish and humble, but I see past the image. She was very studious - maintaining a 4.0 GPA while making music. Her’s was a playful spirit and she was well on her way to being a superstar. 

But her voice...

There’s so many ways to describe it: soft, warm, cool, pure, dark, airy, smokey - all and all, her voice has a haunting beauty to it. As much as I love her music, I know that she wasn’t a powerhouse. But I still give her her due respect as a wonderful artist. The sweetness of her voice is lacking in this day and age, and it’s yet to be copied...

This poem is in response to Natalie’s wonderful poem ‘Night Owl’. A friend who has rediscovered her love for poetry. She is the Night Owl to my Early Bird.

Though there are times where I wish I didn’t think so much, I’m grateful that now, I’m starting to find my way not only as a poet but as a evolving human being. I’m slowly starting to find my way, giving myself to the spiritual light, slowly but steadily. 

In the early hours of the morning, I don’t feel afraid or alone anymore.

I’ll never take them for granted again.

Overview of the Day:

We had a great time yesterday at Media Trust! Vernaire Bass and Ryan Nile from @for_thecreators came in to show how to market our podcasts to a wider audience. We also did a small group exercise - a five-minute podcast with our surprise guest, Dalia Dias, a filmmaker, creative director and photographer. She has worked with Stormzy, Tyga, Chris Brown and many more. My team (IDK Radio) prepared the following questions for her:

1) What was your dream job when you were younger and has this changed?

2) What hurdles do you personally face and how do you overcome them?

Feedback received:

* Delve a bit more into what the guest’s (Dalia) says, as there is always more to context to add to the story. We shouldn’t be so rigid about the questions we have listed. To get stories out of the guest, the key is to listen. Listen to what is being said and ask more questions so the interviewer and the listeners can get more context. There’s always something new to find!

* Try to make as conversational as possible. Basically, we shouldn’t see it as a podcast, just a conversation between two people. We should bring our personalities to it, and enjoy it!

Even though I do have a personal ‘vendetta’ with rhyming poems (a minor one, really), I can’t deny that I rather enjoyed this one. 

Not too long, not too short. Rich with imagery and symbolism and a plethora of ways to understand it, so long as you keep an open mind!

Madness and greatness are connected, there is indeed a very fine line between the two.

Personally speaking, I’ve been called mad on multiple occasions - mainly concerning my ideas for my personal creative projects. What is mad to them (society and naysayers)  is great to you.

And that’s all that matters!

All the greats have been called mad at some point in their lives and yet now, people see and understand their ingenuity. Which can be unfortunate because their genius (in some cases. I’m coming from the writing perspective here, okay?) wasn’t appreciated in their time.

Don’t question yourself. Don’t question your passion.

Don’t be afraid to go wild. Just do it!

Being silent doesn’t make you weak.

Being silent doesn’t mean you’re stupid.

On the contrary, it quite the opposite. Silence is loud - it’s very telling. 

Never let anyone convince you otherwise.

I usually let people go by their own assumption that I don’t know anything solely because I don’t say anything. And though it is good to be vocal, there are times in life where you need to hold your tongue because some wars don’t need to happen. Assess everyone and everything (all situations) with a cool and level head. Think of it like a game of chess and (if you want) make your move.

In short - choose your battles wisely.

This poem was inspired by one of my favourite proverbs. (Not sure where it originates from. I thought it was a Chinese proverb but I’m told it’s Arabian. So confused...)

“A book is like a garden carried in the pocket.”  

While I agree with the idea of a book being a garden, I also feel like it applies to humans too, as we are all unique beings. We have different beliefs and perspectives, but not everyone will understand you. 

Not everyone will understand why you are the way you are (there’s always a reason, single or multitude). Not everyone will understand the way you think. So will completely misunderstand your actions, your words and thoughts.

Happens to me all the time. And you know what? That’s perfectly okay.

That’s just another strength.

That’s the way of life.

But I will say this - try to hold onto the people who do truly understand you. Who are willing to stay with you in your garden. They bring more colour, more light, more life.
