You - Jermaine Dolly
Wow! Summer is here folks! It seems like the heat just came out of nowhere and now it’s HOT for real! Speaking of hotness…the song You by Jermaine Dolly is 100% fire! Ok so, I follow him on Instagram and always look forward to his hilarious posts. He is honestly a very funny guy but when I heard this song, I was like…Ok wait a minute, this guy is REALLY talented! I love everything about it. First of all, it's super original yet feels like an old school classic that you know and love. I like how it starts off very simply with a finger snapping falsetto verse and melodic hook that catches the attention immediately with these words…
So I tell ‘em that it’s You
You’re the reason why I smile
You pick me up when I am low
That’s what you get when you’re His child
There’s so much that I can say
About the man I’m referring to
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus
All the praise belongs to You
This hook is so dope because each line comes across as genuine. It feels like a freestyle…like the words are just flowing straight from his heart. It doesn’t seem overthought or contrived. It’s one of those songs you just start singing along to the first time you hear it like you’ve heard it a million times. I always talk about songs making me happy or bringing a smile to my face because feel good music should always do that. This is a prime example. I can just feel the joy starting the bubble up in the inside of me as the song progresses and builds layer by layer. It’s not rushed or forced rather it naturally adds music, background vocals and adlibs slowly but surely until it takes us to the top of the mountain where the bridge comes in right on time proclaiming…
Now Lord You are my best friend I’ve found
And Lord, You are the reason that makes the world go round
Now You may not get the credit
‘Cause the world seems to forget that
You are the reason why they're here
So Imma be the voice to lift Your name up
And rejoice and make it clear
Yes! This is a wonderful declaration to the Lord that I can relate to wholeheartedly. It’s the way we all should feel about our great father! We must give credit and honor where credit and honor are due (descending from soapbox). Now the final reason that I dig this song is for the DeBarge-esque ending. Brilliant! You Gotta love it! Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus!!!
