M 3

Mi primer cúmulo globular del año. M 3, situado en Canes Venatici, está lejos en nuestra galaxia, a 33.900 AL de distancia, en el halo. Es una aglomeración de más de 500.000 estrellas en un radio de 90 AL. Si estuviéramos dentro de él, el espectáculo sería increíble.

Como todos los cúmulos globulares es viejo, muy viejo. Nada menos que 8.000 millones de años de edad. Nuestra Vía Láctea era una jovencita cuando se formó.

Su origen está sujeto todavía a controversias. Algunos postulan que son restos de galaxias fagocitadas por la Vía Láctea, es decir, que serían de origen extragaláctico, otros consideran que se formaron en nuestra galaxia, mientras otros creen que cada cúmulo globular puede tener un origen distinto. El caso sigue siendo un misterio. Recomiendo el siguiente enlace:
