I had a dream I was eating a random woman out (started off strong but there was a learning curve & I couldn’t get over the hump 😭) and I woke up shaking because I was so hungry for food

Fate

Inspired by this post.

Heat poured from out of the gaping maw that was The Doorway.

The puzzle had been completed, but too late. The wizard's friends were gone -- swallowed by the bricks and stone. Where they were now and if they were even still alive was a mystery.

They should have turned back.

There had been warnings etched into the walls, knife marks and ancient bloodstains. Corpses that littered the hallways, always facing towards the exit. Fleeing. Trying to escape. Never looking forward, never with their gaze set on some unseen treasure.  Adventurers who had been fortunate enough to perish before they had laid their eyes upon this final place. The final room.

Rook wanted them to press on -- begged them to keep moving forward. Looking upon the infinite darkness now, the young wizard was overcome with a certain kind of madness -- a madness induced by one's own actions.

To be tested, and to fail.

Something from the deep stirred from its slumber. It slithered like shadow across the inky blackness there, formless in its horror and yet equally massive and unknowable.

The voice that came out of the void there was slippery and wet against the wizard's ears, intrusive and sharp and heavy. It sounded like rotting and death personified, inevitable and unavoidable.

"Child." It greeted, and Rook very much feel like a helpless child stuck in between the jagged teeth of a predator.

Rook reeled,   the very sound of it Wrong and terrible and utterly alien. The words were ones the wizard could understand, but every syllable felt like it damaged their very soul to its core.

"I have long awaited your arrival." The voice sounded pleased. "Waiting and waiting. Slumbering here, in this soundless sarcophagus. And now -- you have completed the ritual. Here you are now, kneeling before me -- looking for your due reward."

The puzzles in the temple, a ritual --? Dawning horror slowly crept over the wizard's bones, causing them to shake and shiver.

"So. I shall give you the reward you so desperately crave."

"No -- Please!" The wizard cried out into the heat of the void.

"It does not matter what you desire, child." The Thing spoke, its voice like a sharp stick jamming into the wizard's ears -- "You have already set in motion things you could never understand on your own. I am not fueling your greed with cursed treasure or power or fame -- I am gifting you what you truly desire: Knowledge. Security."

"I do not want it. I just want to go home, with my friends!" The wizard pleaded, tears forming in their eyes.

"You will, in due time." The Thing assured, "But do not take comfort in them, for they are destined to end you."

Cavernous silence stretched between Rook and the Doorway. Confusion and fear shook them to the very core. "...What?"

"They will kill you, child. The space you occupy will shift and change, and you will be no more. They will strike you down, because it is written that you shall bring ruin to the world." A long pause. "This certainty is the gift I will reward you with."

Rook looked down at their hands. Dirty with ancient soil and dust. Light scarring around their wrists from using magic so much in the past few years. In service of what? Others? Striving to be a hero --To prove everyone wrong? Was it all for naught? The scars glowed dimly in the darkness,  although not enough to produce a source of light to see by.

A feeling of revulsion and sickness began to twist Rook's frame, forcing them to double over and clutch at their stomach. Nausea caused bile to reach their throat but they swallowed it back down with  a grimace.

"No. That -- that can't be true...All I've ever wanted was to help people. I would never..."

"I have spoken the truth. You will bring death and ruin, and they will cut you down." The Thing pressed, sounding slightly irritated, if it even felt emotions at all. "You are destined to leave a scar upon the world. You will try to run from your Fate, and in doing so will meet it. You will be remembered as the villain."

Rook stared into the void. The heat cut into their face, as if they had climbed into an oven. The words bounced in the wizard's skull, ringing true and terrible.

Perhaps the Thing was only a manifestation of their worst fears. It was the easy rationalization of a mortal faced with an unknown god buried deep in the ground.

And yet.

Yet.
