mandarin grammar: 进一步 jin4 yi1 bu4

进一步 means “one step further” or “to move forward a step” and is used to convey 

subject + (又／再／才能／并) + 进一步 + verb

例子：

我们准备进一步扩大中国市场。「我們準備進一步擴大中國市場。」

We are prepared to further expand the Chinese market

这件事情需要进一步调查。「這件事情需要進一步調查。」

This matter requires further investigation

他没有再进一步发展那个设想。「他沒有再進一步發展那個設想。」

He didn’t develop that idea any further

这次开会的内容是进一步研究这个项目。「這次開會的內容是進一步研究這個項目。」

The purpose of this meeting is to further research this project

mandarin grammar: 包括 bao1 kuo4

包括 means “to include” and can be used to introduce a list of things that are included in a category

包括+A+B...+（在内）

在内 is optional

例子：

公寓的家用电器包括电视和冰箱在内。「公寓的家用電器包括電視和冰箱在內。」

The apartment’s household appliances include a television and refrigerator.

健康饮食中包括蔬菜和水果。「健康飲食中包括蔬菜和水果。」

A healthy diet includes vegetables and fruit.

评判小组中包括几位知名作家。「評判小組中包括幾位知名作家。」

The panel of judges included several well-known authors.

mandarin grammar: 不是 bu2 shi4...而是 er2 shi4

(subject) + 不是 + noun phrase/verb phrase/sentence + 而是 +noun phrase/verb phrase/sentence

this is a grammar structure used to express that A is not the case, but that B is true instead

例子：

他能成功不是因为运气好，而是因为努力工作。「他能成功不是因為運氣好，而是因為努力工作。」

his success isn’t due to good luck, it’s because he worked hard

他们最喜欢吃的中国菜不是宫保鸡丁，而是麻婆豆腐。「他們最喜歡吃的中國菜不是宮保雞丁，而是麻婆豆腐。」

their favorite chinese food isn’t gong bao chicken, it’s mapo tofu

mandarin grammar: 替 ti4

替 can be translated as “for” and can sometimes mean “to do something for someone else”, but it also has the meaning of “to do something in place of someone else”. one common way it’s used is to express feeling some emotion (e.g., happiness, worry, etc.) about someone else’s situation

subject + 替 + noun + verb phrase

例子：

我还在俄罗斯的时候，祥安就在替我找公寓，还帮我申请留学。「我還在俄羅斯的時候，祥安就在替我找公寓，還幫我申請留學。」

when i was still in russia, xiang’an was looking for an apartment for me and helping me apply to study abroad

mandarin grammar: 关于 guan1 yu2

关于「關於」 means “about” or “regarding”

关于 + topic + 的

例子：

我在网上找到了一个关于北京自然灾害的报告。「我在網上找到了一個關於北京自然災害的。」

I found a report about Beijing’s natural disasters online.

我刚看到了一个关于社团招募通知。「我剛看到了一個關於社團招募的通知。」

I just saw a notification about club recruitment.

这本书有很多关于中国文化的资料。「這本書有很多關於中國文化的資料。」

This book has a lot of resources on Chinese culture.

现在关于他的流言蜚语满天飞。「現在關於他的流言蜚語滿天飛。」

Rumors about him are flying everywhere.

mandarin grammar: 趁 chen4

趁 means “to take advantage of” and is used when someone takes advantage of a favorable situation/opportunity to do something.

趁（着）+situation/opportunity

着 is optional

例子：

我们趁着这次旅游的机会，尝了各种好吃的特色小吃。「我們趁著這次旅遊的機會，嘗了各種好吃的特色小吃。」

We took advantage of this travel opportunity to try all types of special dishes.

趁着教授有时间，我问了他几个问题。「趁著教授有時間，我問了他幾個問題。」

I asked my professor a few questions when he had time.

趁这个机会我讲几个句话。「趁這個機會我講幾個句話。」

I would like to take this opportunity to say a few words.
