Before Davey, Mary had never been on an actual date. She had hooked up with her fair share of guys – and liked more than her fair share – but was always content to move on before things got too serious. But Rabastan made her consider going out on a limp and asking him out in fifth year. She liked the way they seemed to find their way back to each other at every party, and never tired of their stupid shot contests and drunken banter. And, not yet weighed down by the thought that there was such a serious divide between “pureblood” and “muggleborn”, she began to wonder what it would be like to hang out with him actually sober.
But, she’s not really sure if she ever did ask him. She remembers the party where she decided to bring it up – some lake-side bash in honor of the weather turning warm again, though the organizers seemed to forget that it still got pretty cold at night. She remembers him being there, the two of them hanging out together. She remembers having enough tequilla shots to feel warm enough to shed her jacket, and then some more. But after that… things started to get lost.
In the harsh light of a hungover morning, she realized she might have asked him, but if she did, she didn’t remember. Too nervous to bring it up again – because what if what she had forgotten was an embarrassing rejection – she just let it go. To this date, he has never brought up anything about it, so it still remains a mystery.
