The M-94 cipher ring used by the U.S. Army between 1922 and 1945. The rings were turned to create a message near the bar that held the device together. The letters nearby, say 3-4 lines down, were copied as the decipher code just prior to scrambling the letters. The person receiving the cipher needed the decoding letters and their respective positions to put the original message back in place.
