oop, just got around to responding to these! again, thanks for the responses!! for someone who isn’t really that into card games, i really enjoy learning about family traditions involving them

uno! my family and i play it after dinner usually
uno is one of those games where i know it and i’ve definitely played it, but i can’t remember any instances of having played it beyond like one memory. any particular reason for uno/why did y’all start that tradition?

my uncle rly likes it and is big on routines bc of mental health so it was always smth we did every summer when we went to the beach like theres never been a time in my life where i didnt play!! we were not a big board game family so skipbo was our go-to. also yep its that one!
oh, neat—having a tradition like that all your life that isn’t like.. holiday/religion related seems kinda rare to me? routines are handy tho!

I was able to Google it using the rules, and learned that apparently all this time our addition of singing Amazing Grace when you lost all of your 'lives'/tokens was just an addition the adults made so you'd have one more chance xD here's the Actual card game: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninety-nine_(addition_card_game)
GGHK that’s pretty funny!! but also interesting in the way that widespread practices like a card game can be changed in little bits and be modified to suit the individual/family. thank you for looking it up for me, i hope you enjoyed the surprise revelation??

i dont have any specific memories worth mentioning, but i did teach a bunch of my classmates in HS how to play shanghai rummy. one of them played in a group with me and 2 of my friends, but he quit because he wasn't winning (he always won at the other game we played so i guess he just couldnt stand it). i also keep most of the scorecards from when i win. my dad has a bad habit of getting either really bad scores or winning by a landslide (no inbetween)
ahh, sore losers. i’ve never been the best or worst at card games, just sort of middling. it’s neat that you keep most of the scorecards, my family never keeps score of our pre-meal games. in extensive including-relatives family game sessions of pounce we’d keep score, but i’m not really sure where the scores went after that. i haven’t played in a long while either
