I've been thinking about living off-grid in a location reachable with 4x4 only. As I drive trucks for a living, I see these bad boys on the road a lot. Finally caught up with a detachment at a fuel stop and inquired as to what they are and what kind of fuel mileage they get. M1078A-1 and M1079A-1 are the types, and 5-8 mpg is normal. Since they use a Caterpillar diesel engine it wouldn't be difficult to use biodiesel, which would drop fuel costs considerably and allow one to produce their own fuel. The biggest draw to this vehicle is tri-fold. 1) Off-road capability. This truck has insane approach and depart angles and also has great suspension articulation. 2) Durability. The U.S. military likes to buy equipment that will last for as long as possible and this happens to be one of those acquisitions. The Army has been using them since 1996 and our government usually won't use any equipment for very long if it isn't adequate. 3) Availability. A quick search brings up a large amount of these vehicles in good working order for reasonable prices. $4k-5k for a vehicle that is fully off-road capable? Hells yeah. Tried and tested, well maintained and ready for service. Source: http://www.ironplanet.com/Trucks+-+LMTV
