your post on local currencies in flight rising is amazingly well thought out, and makes me think that in sornieth "treasure" is just a collective word for currency in general. and also makes me wonder where gems and prehnite, the other two canon currencies, fit into that equation, and gives me ideas about decorative scrimshaws being a form of plague currency somewhere, somehow, and the fact that there's probably even more local currencies out there because of typical clan life being so isolated.
Aww, thank you! I'm really glad that my post is still inspiring people.
I definitely think that 'treasure' is just a catch-all term for currency. In my own interpretation, 'treasure' is a term mostly used only in a meta sense for the sake of simplicity on-site; dragons in Sorneith are more likely to refer to currency generally just as 'currency' or 'money', though 'treasure' may be another acceptable slang term in some regions.
Re: gems... that's an interesting question. My currencies are made out of a wide variety of materials, and some, like dazal and arcslivers, are made out of minerals or semiprecious stones, but they don't have as much value as onsite gems have in my mind. I'd wager that 'gems' refers to an assortment of precious stones like amethyst, ruby, emerald, etc., likely refined in some way (cut into specific shapes and polished). Perhaps they're accepted as a sort of secondary currency system, with a much higher value per unit than standard 'treasure' currency? I could see their use being that their value is accepted anywhere on Sorneith, making them the ultimate convertible currency - whereas 'treasure' currencies (excluding, for the most part, vahrani) are largely regional and cannot always be exchanged elsewhere. Given, the exchange rates for individual gems will depend on where you are and who you're bartering with is, but the point stands that gems are a versatile and universal currency.
The above is all just my spitball initial thoughts to this ask, not anything I'd consider hard canon in my headworld just yet. But if anybody likes that idea, or has different thoughts and ideas on what gems are in-canon, by all means, share!
Also, I didn't realize prehnite was a canon currency? Huh, that's a fun little fact! I do really love the idea of there being highly localized currencies, though - it makes absolute sense, especially for clans that are largely isolated from the world at large and/or conduct trade mostly among themselves and other nearby clans.
I love your Plague currency idea, btw! Plague doesn't seem like the type of place to have an officially regulated, minted currency, but I could see some sort of currency developing out of the need to have a value stand-in when direct resources and services can't be offered.
Every day I am further tempted to make a ridgeback appreciation blog
important question. If I typed up a long-winded lore post about the various types of common currency in Sorneith, would anybody be interested in seeing?
melting down apparel is the funniest shit. like imagine you ask someone for an ingredient and they rip off their pants and slam-dunk them straight into the cauldron
You all better enjoy the next few days of my queue because after that you are getting BLASTED with obelisk posts
Show me your dragons with Dark Sclera
