One kiss, and that was all.
They looked at each other in the darkness with brilliant eyes, saying nothing. But it was the kind of nothing that meant everything.

“Strange was everyone's idea of what a magician ought to be. He was tall; he was charming; he had a most ironical smile..”
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell - Susanna Clarke
Jonathan Strange was a very different sort of person from his father. He was not avaricious; he was not proud; he was not ill-tempered and disagreeable. But though he had no striking vices, his virtues were perhaps almost as hard to define. At the pleasure parties of Wcymouth and in the drawing-rooms of Bath he was regularly declared to be "the most charming man in the world" by the fashionable people he met there, but all that they meant by this was that he talked well, danced well, and hunted and gambled as much as a gentleman should.
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell - Susanna Clarke
“And all that Childermass knew made him smile; and some of what he knew made him laugh out loud; and none of what he knew wrung from him so much as ha'pennyworth of pity.”
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke
There are very few modern magicians who do not declare themselves to be either Strangite or Norrellite, the only notable exception being Childermass himself. Whenever he is asked he claims to be in some degree both. As this is like claiming to be both Whig and Tory at the same time, no one understands what he means.

“[...] the shadows seemed to form a picture of a thin, dark man in a greatcoat and boots. The next moment the illusion was gone. Childermass blinked. "Where am I wandering to?" he asked himself irritably. "And what am I doing talking to myself? This is no time to be woolgathering!"
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke
"Mr Strange," said Mr Norrell, "seems a very pleasant gentleman and a very talented magician who may yet be a most creditable addition to our profession...”
“The room was not empty; there was a man sitting at a table who rose as they entered, and whom Mr Norrell briefly declared to be Childermass, his man of business.“
