“The perforated work in part grew out of the fact that except for translucent porcelain, clay is generally dense, opaque and absolutely ruled by gravity. I think because of that, or inspired by that, I wanted to make objects from clay wherein material was replaced by light so as to make ethereal forms that might seem to hover. It was all driven by a disagreement, or argument if you like, about the very nature of the material and what might be possible."
