I don’t really understand what’s up with Disney. Have they just flung themselves bodily into the idea that all press is good press? That controversy is the way to go on everything?
Given some of the quotes going around, it’s very hard not to get the impression of them spraying gasoline on the fandom fire around Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
And now there’s the bizarre mess that is the live action Mulan remake they’re making, which now isn’t a remake and... I don’t even know what it is now. I’m at somewhat a loss as to how making the villain a witch isn’t rather akin to doing Robin Hood, except now the villain is a dragon. It doesn’t just change the story, it appears to be a completely different story.
In any version of Mulan I’m aware of, she joins the army in her father’s place...her father having been called up due to some invading army. Without an invading army, where does the rest of the plot go? Is the witch going to be leading an invading army? Has the emperor called up an army to fight a witch? I mean, what is even happening here?
Their other live action remakes have stayed fairly close to the originals, so far as I understand, with the most different being The Jungle Book. Except the differences there were to make the new movie a little closer to the book.
Look, Disney, guys, the point is to make good movies, not hope that if you have enough controversy, you’ll make buttloads of money. Are you being run by underwear gnomes?
