Macaranga tanarius is a fast growing pioneer species in the wet part of tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Australia. When cut, the tree sap oxidised immediately and turns red, looks deliciously tempting. In fact it’s called the bleeding tree in China.

A Crematogaster ant close to the small rounded white “beccarian bodies” of a cut-open domatia belonging to a Macaranga plant in Bornean forest. I discovered this symbiosis thanks to my friend and great botanist @messinanicola, my invaluable guide to Asia and precious trip mate since quite some time now. David’s heart! I love this common name for this tree (for obvious reasons).

Other common (and very apt) names of this tree include: Parasol leaf tree, Blush Macaranga, Nasturtium tree, and Heart leaf.
