Two portraits of two different Dendropsophus kamagarini from @losamigosbiologicalstation. This species was described as distinct from the closely related D. parviceps on 2018. It inhabits the lowland forest of South-eastern Peru where Matsigenka people live. Hence the specific name “kamagarini” is from their language and it means “devil” or “demon”, because of the two small horns on its head. People is often scared by centipedes like this Scolopendra cingulata cause they’re kind of jerky and unpredictably moving. They’re in fact shy animals that run for their life as soon as one turns a stone where they’re hiding. This morning, I turned one of the hundreds stones around me in a beautiful countryside close to Rome and it was there, not really moving since it was a bit chilly. I took a few shots then I let it crawl a little out of the place where the stone previously was and I put the stone back. Finally I gently touched the centipede to let it go back under it. Long story short: less stress possible to a jewel of the undergrowth and big care to no squish it under…his home! This is a Fringe-limbed Treefrog (Ecnomiohyla fimbrimembra), a very poorly known Central American species. Since its description on 1948, the knowledge about this species remains very poor and just a handful of specimens were ever collected within its habitat on low altitude (around 1500 m) montane forests of Costa Rica and the very remote population found in Panama. From this last location, 220 km from the Costarican ones, only two different specimens were ever recorded since 1982. This one in this image is the second one, currently under a conservation program by Panamanian researchers. It’s currently listed as ENDANGERED by IUCN and it’s a close relative to the already believed extinct and Rabbs' Fringe-limbed (Ecnomiohyla rabborum) which became famous after the death of its presumably last member, called “Thougie” by Atlanta Botanical Gardens where it lived its last years. As someone else said, I really hope that both species still survive in the Panamanian forests and it’s just “lack of luck” of those looking for them. They’re secretive and hard to find species, so I hope it’s just bad luck and not other jewels of biodiversity vanishing under our eyes. These species were probably heavily affected by chytrid fungus, which we spread all over the world and led many Amphibian species to total extinction. I just cannot thing of a world without frogs. Even seen from above, with a transmitted flashlight, the glass frogs appear diaphanous and transparent. This beautiful Santa Cecilia Cochran frog (Teratohyla midas) from @losamigosbiologicalstation was one of my personal best findings during my stay at the station. It wasn’t even raining since a lot, so I felt really lucky to find one on a leaf at night close to the station! Leopard gliding frogs (Rhacophorus pardalis) hanging on leaves around a breeding pond into Kubah National Park (Sarawak, Borneo) at night. As the common name says, this is one of the species able to actively glide between two plants thanks to their highly webbed feet.
