26th February 1564, baptism date of English playwright, poet and translator Christopher Marlowe. Born the same year as William Shakespere, Marlowe was in his brief life a great influence upon Shakespere, who after Marlowe’s death would rise to replace Marlowe as the prominent Elizabethan playwright. Marlowe’s play Doctor Faustus, was the first dramatised version of the Faust legend, his protagonist being unable to repent for his deal with the devil, and ending up being carried off by demons. His performance as Macbeth on the 31st March 1785, garnered him praise even surpassing that of David Garrick.
