Anyone who owns a MacBook help do they basically stop working and can you not update them after a few years like iPads and iPhones or would it be a good investment that could replace my iPad and take me through uni and stuff when I eventually go

I just got a macbook air today, any suggestions on what apps to download or any tips at all? Its my first mac so anything is appreciated :)
