«All human things are subject to decay, And, when fate summons, monarchs must obey.» (from Mac Flecknoe) ~ «How ill my Fear they by my Mercy scan, Beware the Fury of a Patient Man.» (from Absalom and Achitophel) ~ #HappyBirthday to #JohnDryden (1631-1700) English poet, literary critic, translator, and playwright who was made England's first Poet Laureate in 1668. He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the Age of Dryden. He established the heroic couplet as a standard form of English poetry by writing successful satires, religious pieces, fables, epigrams, compliments, prologues, and plays with it; he also introduced the alexandrine and triplet into the form. In his poems, translations, and criticism, he established a poetic diction appropriate to the heroic couplet that was a model for his contemporaries and for much of the 18th century, resulting with his heroic couplet becoming the dominant poetic form of the 18th century. Alexander Pope was heavily influenced by Dryden and often borrowed from him; other writers were equally influenced by Dryden and Pope. Besides his poetry, his translations of Virgil's works and his essay of literary criticism, Essay of Dramatick Poesie, were very popular. Walter Scott called him "Glorious John". ~ Best-known works: • All for Love (1677-78, heroic play) • Astraea Redux (1660, panegyric) • Annus Mirabilis (1667, long narrative poem) • An Essay of Dramatick Poesie (1668, essay) • Absalom and Achitophel (1681, long satirical poem) • MacFlecknoe (1682, mock-heroic satire) • Alexander's Feast (1697, ode) ~ «Great wits are sure to madness near alli'd; And thin partitions do their bounds divide» (from Absalom and Achitophel) ~ #Dryden #MacFlecknoe #AbsalomAndAchitophel #AllForLove #AnnusMirabilis #AlexandersFeast #AnEssayOfDramatickPoesie #AstraeaRedux #PoetLaurate #restorationpoetry #book #poem #poet #books #bookstagram #poetry #bibliophile #reading #read #booklove #bookoftheday #instabook #literature #booklion #booktube #bookworm #epic
